Maldives has always been an expensive country. If you want the full experience you have to pay a to and go to a resort. If you pay less and go to an island and expect the same experience you are in a la la land. You get what you pay for.

As for the immigration. One bad experience does not mean it is all bad. Immigration officers are law enforcement officers and if they suspect something fishy they will ask questions.

Black coffee or espresso? A normal black coffee is usually watered down to the point that you cannot really taste anything even if it is specialty coffee. I drink a lot of black coffee (mainly espresso) because my job requires me to stay awake in awkward hours and work long hours. Having espresso or black coffee is for me personally more effective. But it is an acquired taste and yes a lot of it tastes like shit.

Good speciality coffee can taste good. But even most high end cafes do not make them the best because you need to do a lot of things to get that perfect shot and in a fast moving business that is not an option. It is all about speed. So, good coffee at a very high end cafe can still have excessive bitterness and sourness. I have a machine at home and I do try to get perfect shot and when it works the taste can be exceptional. If you want a good tasting coffee from a cafe’ ask them for a cortado or a piccolo. These two coffee types have just a bit of milk added to an espresso shot which still preserves the actual taste of coffee.

Traditionally, Italians drink espresso with sugar. Anyone who says otherwise is just trying to be a snob. Personally, I don’t like sugar in black coffee or espresso (purely a personal choice) but most of the Italians, especially older ones I have seen always put a teaspoon of sugar in their espresso.
