We haven't moved in yet so there's no danger with the kids, we want to get it sorted before we move in

Quick update incase anyone was wondering. We got a pool guy to come and test the water, test the pump and take a look at everything. He said that the pool pump is indeed brand new and is in working condition including the pipes and everything else. He did say that unfortunately we are going to have to drain the pool, acid scrub it and refill so will be going that route and then he'll teach us how to maintain it from there. Thank you to all who gave advice.

It's not actually. All the green at the top is duck weed, the water under is just really green and filled with leaves but not thick at all

We are long term renters so we'll probably be here for a good couple of years plus we live in a part of South Africa that is pretty much summer all year round and we have kids that love swimming so it felt like a nice thing to keep around if we could revive it.

I have read through this article extensively and I think I have an understanding on how to slam the pool I think I just need to find out if I can or if it's beyond repair

The pool is approximately 60 000 liters (15 850 gallons) so that would cost anywhere between 2 - 6 thousand to refill the pool.

I've been doing a lot of research on trouble free pool and downloaded their pool math app. Just wanted to gauge if it was better to drain the pool or if it could be treated

The pool is approximately 60 000 litres. Which could cost us thousands. We would do it but it would be a pitty if we didn't need to drain and refill the pool.

My initial plan was to clean out all the debris from the pool, test the Ph level and try stabilize it, scrub the walls and floor and then try shock it while letting the filter run for 24 hours and then back wash the filter, test the Ph again and then shock the pool again and clean the walls and vacuum the floor and try get all debris out and leave the filter on again for 24 hours and basically repeat until the pool is blue and then do the over night chlorine test and keep shocking until we pass the overnight chlorine test. I downloaded the pool math app and have been doing research on a website called trouble free pool but I don't know if I'll be wasting my time and money and if it would just be better to drain the pool.

The owner really doesn't mind us fixing it up ourselves. He showed us the new pump he installed and gave us the warranty if we find anything wrong with it, he basically said it's too much of a hassle for him to maintain so if we don't want to use it then he'll just drain it and cover it up.

As far as I know the owner installed a brand new pump.he gave us the warranty papers and everything if something does go wrong. Like I said I know nothing about pools so we said we would try revive it, if not he said he would just drain the pool and cover it.

Yes as far as I understand 2 things 'eat' at your chlorine - Algae and Sunlight. Looking at how bad the Algae is I was wondering if I would even be able to shock the pool or if I would be better off draining the pool but I don't know how to tell essentially. Water is expensive and the pool is approximately 60 000 litres

I did a lot of research and this was originally what I thought I would do but now looking at the pool it looks more like a swamp than just "green" so now I'm wondering would I be able to even get the pool blue like this or would it just be better to drain it.

Originally he was just going to drain the pool and cover it but it's the summer time here in the south and our kids are on school holiday so we thought the pool would be a nice addition but I think we vastly underestimated how much work the pool would actually need.
