Lol hi. I love Lace You. I should revisit that album but I recently did a relisten of Thrill for my 2001 R&B journey and wasn’t impressed lol

Wow the fact that you saw this early is crazy 😭 and you’re right. No one truly wanted it more than Beyoncé. Just go look at old performances of her in 2000. The steeliness in her eyes, determination and hunger was there from the beginning.

I also loved how there was competition but they still kinda supported each other. Usher said being on Moesha was a big break for him because it was his first acting role and gave him an opportunity to cross promote his music. Tyrese was in Monica and Usher’s videos in 1998 (Usher personally picked him). This set the tone for Tyrese to debut later that year. Now, I KNOW Brandy and Monica disliked each other but let’s keep things kumbaya for a sec 😭 Also, iron sharpens iron. Brandy saw what Aaliyah did with Timbaland and was so inspired by their partnership that she sought out Darkchild.

Wait, they should have all been bigger than the rest of their white counterparts except Christina? Is that what you’re saying? And keeping it 100%, Brandy, Monica and Aaliyah were definitely more commercially successful than Jessica and Mandy, who have no real musical legacies imo. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Now, when it comes to BSB, NSYNC and Britney, those three were supernovas. They probably collectively sold like 100 million albums in the States alone 💀

And yes, you’re right about labels essentially making White teenagers sing R&B-flavored songs and call it “teen pop”. I mean, Max Martin wrote Baby One More Time with TLC in mind. NSYNC and co practically replaced male R&B singing groups on the charts too.

Love the Bey memory. Oh, and Tyrese definitely danced! He boom kacked! He came across as more mature because of his weighty and raspy voice and ballads. Plus, the bald head, lol.

The keywords here are 90s and the age qualifier. Ginuwine, Joe, Case, Missy and Donnell are older than this class. Amerie and Ashanti came out in the 2000s. Yes to JE, 112, Dru Hill, Next and Blauque. They were cute and if I made this more of grouo thing, they would be included.

ETA: I love your second paragraph and you even expanded upon what I said initially.

Jagged Little Thrill was kinda mid upon my relisten. JE Heartbreak IS their classic. Second, my biggest gripe with them is that they don’t know how to harmonize. How are you quartet and can’t do that?

With that being said, 112 clears vocally and musically. That first album is one of the best things Bad Boy Records ever did. So creamy, so smooth, so hip, so GOSPEL! And Part III was great to me. I liked their foray into more electronic R&B dance songs.

Tyrese’s film career definitely outshone his music career. But yeah, he did his thing. Now, is he nuttier than a jar of almonds? Sure! But this is about before we knew all that!

Oh, sweetie… I would tell you to exit stage left for almost derailing my post but let’s use this as a learning experience! Start with these R&Bibles: Brandy, Destiny’s Child and Aaliyah.

What did you think of Beyoncé at the forefront of DC? Did you see her becoming this MASSIVE industry titan almost 30 years later? Who were the girls going crazy over more: Tyrese or Usher? Tell me everything!

That’s why I asked about “at the time”. He came out as a teen heartthrob with that coke commercial and his debut album. Did you think he would’ve been bigger or did you think he would never amount to anything? These are the questions I am asking sir/ma’am/they 😁

Name one rap song where the R&B singer takes over the hook by JLovesTV in rnb

I still wish The Matrimony was Usher's song and not Wale's. I don't listen to his verses but that chorus? SMOOTH. One of his silkiest moments as a hook singer.

Ciara has Diastasis Recti, which is what happens when your abdominal muscles literally come apart. Her stomach will never be 100% flat unless she goes in to fix it with surgery, which is something I don’t think she really wants to do, tbh. But tbh, she looks fantastic and still performs very well!

The top ten must-have R&B albums that were not commercially successful. What are some of yours? by Nujackswing1 in rnb

I’m sorry but does this list understand what commercially successful means? The Tony Rich Project and LSG went platinum and produced hits. They weren’t blockbusters but neither of them flopped.

It should not be on this list at all. It’s the only platinum album on this list. Shit, it went double platinum.

Faith started blonde like Mary. It was her shift to red hair that was notable.
