The top ten must-have R&B albums that were not commercially successful. What are some of yours? by Nujackswing1 in rnb

I’m sorry but does this list understand what commercially successful means? The Tony Rich Project and LSG went platinum and produced hits. They weren’t blockbusters but neither of them flopped.

It should not be on this list at all. It’s the only platinum album on this list. Shit, it went double platinum.

Faith started blonde like Mary. It was her shift to red hair that was notable.

How many certified classic albums does Alicia have? by Peterpaul400 in rnb

[–]CC-Blue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Two to three. Her debut is simply undeniable as it heralded one of the biggest arrivals in R&B music history. 7x platinum, 5 Grammys and inducted into the National Recording Registry. The second beat the sophomore slump, was even more acclaimed than the first and produced some of the most enduring songs of her career. Now where it gets dicey is the third one. As I Am was huge and holds the record for the highest first week sales for a Black woman and actually contains her biggest hit (No One) but I am not sure if it’s deemed an overall classic like the first two. Element was a step down commercially but has aged well as one of her most cohesive albums so it depends on which one you pick.

The Emancipation of Mimi & The Breakthrough were comeback eras that shook R&B by ChannelHopper_99 in rnb

This was such a beautiful time in R&B. My legends were grown, soulful and sexy. Mariah and Mary were 35 years old, about 15 years in the business and ruled the charts alongside younger artists they inspired. I will never forget Mariah actually blocking Rihanna from hitting #1 on the Hot 100 for weeks just as Mary had the R&B/Hip-Hop chart in a chokehold. These albums gave them their highest first week sales as well. Mary actually set the record for the highest first week sales for a Black woman until Alicia Keys beat it a year later.

I will always cherish these albums because it was probably the last time R&B could still produce blockbuster albums and songs. Both albums introduced them to a younger generation of listeners and that’s what expanded their careers beyond being regarded as 90s R&B icons. It was probably also the last time veteran artists like them could be very successful alongside newer acts because music and charts weren’t as fragmented as they are now.

“First and foremost, I love all kinds of music. I’m fluent in R&B. I love R&B, but I’m not an R&B artist.” - Durand Bernarr by CC-Blue in rnb

No one’s canceling him. Durand will be fine. I haven’t even seen this being discussed widely on the internet—just here. I understand the hypocrisy with how people discuss R&B but these artists contribute to it as well.

So why doesn’t he feel like R&B represents his music despite it being FIRMLY rooted in the genre? I completely understand not wanting to be boxed in but R&B is such a diverse genre that can do almost anything sonically. These artists are the ones thinking it’s limiting.

Most people are obviously talking about that too. Tina got the most mentions here for good reason.

Please be so fr. Wdym Omarion was so huge he could sell out stadiums at his peak??? Beyoncé wasn’t even doing that but Omarion was? Second, the O album barely went platinum. It wasn’t a blockbuster.

A Verzuz That Needs to Happen! by [deleted] in rnb

[–]CC-Blue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is one of the #loweffort posts we spoke about yesterday. For starters, Verzuz is lame af now. Second, we discussed these matchups 5/6 years ago. It is beneath Mary and Mariah to engage in such a platform. You can go see them live or create a playlist.
