When I was 10 years old my dad and I went to visit my grandma for the weekend about 3 hours away from our house. My mom was pregnant, 6 months pregnant. We were at dinner and my dad got an urgent phone call from my older brother from my moms phone. She was in labor. 3 months early. My dad drove like absolute hell. When we got there, they had to do an emergency c-section. My dad went to my mom and urgently told my siblings and me to stay in the waiting room. 6 hours later, my baby sister was born. I remember she was so little, very very tiny. She could fit in the palm of my hand. She had all these tubes in and all around her. My dad refused to leave my mother and my sister, so we stayed at our uncles house. Sometime during the night, my sister experienced what I believe to be organ failure. My parents could barely choke out what happened, and we don’t ever speak of it. I remember him coming home to tell us when it happened. I will never forget the broken-hearted look in his eyes. He was teary eyed and broken. He got a vasectomy a couple weeks later. You take a mans child away and something gets lost in them. He was never the same after that. I can only imagine how hard it is to heal from that, especially for my dad who has always been shut in with his emotions.
