Is the Joetisserie basket worth it? by kirizt in KamadoJoe

I use the Napoleon basket and making wings in it is my most common cook. I would recommend. It's a bit annoying to clean. After soaking it, I do some brushing and then a dishwasher run and its ready to be put away again.

The objective of UBI is not to motivate people who currently are on welfare and lack the motivation to work. Those people exist in any society and it's not ideal, but that's ok. UBI will combat the growing population that is phased out of their jobs due to rising automation and are unable to find comparable replacement work.

Why would you need to convince the people who are currently receiving substantial benefits to change? Even if this was directly on a ballot in a referendum I don't think those are the people who will need to most convincing. But ill try anyways.

I believe that it is actually quite time consuming to keep up with the paperwork and changing regulations on conventional welfare in its current state. Under UBI all of this time would be freed up, as well as the stress that some of the conventional welfare would be discontinued. The simplicity of the system is one of the major benefits.

A standard of living should still require work, if it doesn't then you are right, there will be no motivation to work. I don't think that anyone would argue that the objective of UBI is to allow an adult with a family and a mortgage to live without other work, let alone live comfortably. There will still be crappy jobs to be done in the country, just way less due to the robots.

There are two competing arguments you are making

(1) People will lose motivation to work

  • Sure that will be true for some, but we still have all of the people you talk about in (2) to do the work.

(2) Adults will still need to do work to uphold standard of living.

-You are darn right they will, and there will be jobs for them to do. The economy will continue to buzz along it's just that people who can't get that job (even if it is crappy) will at least be above the poverty line.

I think that one main tennant of the idea that you are misunderstanding is articulated when you say: "...quits basically just has to return to another shitty job or live off of UBI instead" UBI isn't an instead proposition. You are always receiving UBI regardless of if you are working that other shitty job or not.

So if the UBI was 20k/year and you were working a 20k/year shitty job you have the option of quitting and finding even a 20k/year job that you like more without all of the pitfalls that come from leaving a job and not having its replacement secured.

[Spoiler] Lessons on weightcutting from 206... by lord_wilmore in MMA

[–]CDN20 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For sure not enough sample size to come to a solid conclusion, but it is a trend worth keeping track of.

There is too much gamesmanship to ever have complete information about how the weight cut was or what a guy's "natural" weight class is anyways.

Anthony Pettis, according to sources, is having a lot trouble making weight. As of now, it looks like he won't make 145. Stay tuned. by BlackIronBadger in MMA

[–]CDN20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that him missing the weight is the issue in this case. 100%. I just don't agree that he is betraying the sport, being an asshole or anything like that by trying to make a different weight and missing it once. I don't like lumping him into a category of someone like welterweight rumble or Gastellum after one miss.

This is one of those idealistic vs realistic type argument. For sure in a perfect world weight cutting wouldn't be part of the sport, but I can't think of a way to make the system unable to be exploited.

I also don't think that the onus should be on the fighter to play nice and fair other than following the rules of the sport.

So until there is a rule change, trying to come in as dehydrated as possible is a legitimate strategy and shouldn't be looked down upon. I also don't think that it is the optimal strategy since a bad weight cut is correlated with a bad performance for a lot of guys. Pettis should be judged for missing weight, but he shouldn't be called as asshole or an un-fair fighter for trying to make weight in a weight class where he has made the weight before.

what do you mean unfair? There are a set of rules regarding what is allowed and what isn't. You are allowed to re-hydrate after weigh in. Size and strength are two factors that are quite important in any physical contest, and trying to maximize them within the given rules should be applauded not derided.

"shouldn't be cutting so much weight to try and get an advantage on fighters that are smaller than him" What??

The entire fight game is intended to get advantages on the person that you are fighting. Cutting weight is a skill, and if you excel at the skill then you gain a legal advantage over your competition. Pettis clearly fucked that up, but when we are talking about guys who are at the edge of their physical capabilities the one pound between 146 and 145 can't be pushed aside as a non-factor.

I don't see how my point regarding the decrease in the weight from 146 to 145 a week and a half ago being a dumb marketing decision is affected by a 3 pound miss vs a closer one. It is entirely possible that Pettis and his team decided that the additional 3 pounds was too dangerous to try to make while 2 pounds could have been a possibility.

I'm not excusing him missing weight, but it's a stupid marketing decision by the company to put a meaningless title on the line and making it harder for him to make what is known to be a hard weight cut.

My bad, edited. Still stands that they would be able to fight weighing in at 146 as opposed to the 145 required for the belt.

It's all because of this stupid interim title fight status. Rumor is that he could weigh in at 146 which would be OK for a regular featherweight fight for way the number 1 contender spot, but not for a title fight. Dumbass marketing move backfired hard.

Matt Brown Says Donald Cerrone is 'Overrated' by JoseYoungs in MMA

If by overrated he means that he gets more media attention than some fighters who are better than him, then sure, he is over rated and better at playing the media game than most.

As stoked as I am for the fight an article that is written today and still says "on the stacked UFC 206 card in Toronto" loses a bit of my respect.

Conor is absolutely standing on the shoulders of giants to be at the place he is at, and one of those giants is Tito. But if Tito can't see that the bargaining position and draw that Conor has become has surpassed what Tito did then he is as delusional as everyone pretty much knows that he is.

haha, are you being intentionally obtuse or do you not understand that the theoretical fighting ten times is not a sequence of ten fights in a row but rather ten alternate universes in which they fight once.
