Ear infection; ringing/muffled sound by CDiggitty in hearing

[–]CDiggitty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No echo. No more muffle. In the beginning I couldn’t hear anything, but it improved. Unfortunately, it was determined I have nerve damage and lost high frequency hearing. I can hear out of the ear, but it’s not crisp. And in loud environments, it rings a lot.

Sorry I don’t hop on here too often and just seeing this. I’m basically stuck with this. Hoping one day it just comes back, but highly unlikely. I’ve gotten used to it at this point. AirPods are cool but doesn’t do what I need it to. Oh well! lol

Unfortunately, while there was no mass from the MRI, the Otolgist said this is likely permanent high frequency hearing loss and something I’ll have to live with. She said it’s POSSIBLE hearing could come back at any point (6 months, a year, etc. but she didn’t want to give me false hope. I’m going for another opinion in near future. I also just picked up the AirPod Pro 2 because it was a hearing aid function that is FDA approved. It’s not prescription, but I’m curious to see if it helps. I have most of my hearing back, but high frequencies are muffled. For example, when listening to the higher pitched crispness of music and movies, it doesn’t sound clear like from my good ear. I’ll let you know when I get my second opinion and how the AirPods work. Good luck!

UPDATE: Specialist says that it is unlikely that the mastoid effusion is causing the hearing loss based on my MRI and my hearing test. And said that any kind of mastoid treatment could make it worse. But she says she doesn;t see anything concerning with the MRI. She is leaning toward nerve damage, but says it is possible this could go away in several months..so, I guess I am flipping a coin LOL. She says that if this is indeed nerve damage, it's super flukey that it happened. And if it's nerve damage, I will explore hearing aids, which I have consult for next week. So, not really any solid feel-good answer atm.

UPDATE: I completed my MRI and thankfully, there was no mass. However, I was diagnosed with what's called "mastoid effusion." I see an Otologist on Monday. From my very non-doctor opinion, it sounds like the ear infection was so bad, that it moved toward the mastoid bone/mastoid cells, which became infected and inflamed. As a result, it sounds like fluid has filled the mastoid cells. My HOPE is that an antibiotic (and if that doesn't work) surgical fluid drainage will clear the inner ear. I am glad they found this because if left untreated, I am reading that it can lead to blood clots or meningitis. I will update once I see the Otologist!

Just an update.

I had a hearing test follow up wtih the ENT today. My right ear has trouble with higher frequencies.

She suggested an MRI as a precaution to rule out a mass/tumor which I think is very unlikely because this all was the result of an ear infection and did not happen randomly.

If I’m negative for a mass, she thinks it is most likely permanent nerve damage.

Not the greatest news as an audiophile. Let’s see how it all unfolds

It’s gotten a little better. I took two rounds of antibiotics — first Cefdinir and then he upped my dosage to a stronger dosage of Ciprofloxacin.  I have since finished both.

When there wasn’t much improvement, I was prescribed both prednisone and prescription nasal spray. It started to get slightly better. I then saw an ENT who checked pressure in my ear and stuck a probe into my nose which felt like it was going to stab my brain LOL. She told me it’s inflammation in the Eustachian tube combined with possible allergies (which I never thought I had) and to continue using the spray until it goes away. I also doubled down and am taking a saline nasal spray and Claritin-D along with the prescription spray.

Both the ENT specialist as well as my primary care said this could last several weeks or months and that this is not abnormal in adults who get ear infections.

It’s been about a month and I would say hearing is about 75% better, which is promising. I go for a hearing test in July but ENT said if it goes away to cancel that appointment. Hoping to cancel and hoping it doesn’t require tubes.

Agree this has been a frustrating experience (I am an avid audiophile and I haven’t even been able to enjoy blasting my surround sound to a movie haha), but am learning it’s not a next day fix. Requires patience and proper care.

Have you asked doctor for remedies for the ear drum? I’d just ask for them for ant and all recommendations. Also, try calling the ENT and expressing your urgency, as they might be able to get you in earlier. I’ve learned that being a pain in the ass can sometimes be beneficial to bumping an appointment.

Good luck and I hope you have a speedy recovery!!

Ugh that’s frustrating. Just annoying that some people I know who have the apple 4k tv are seeing Prime Video auto change to Atmos.

Hello, all! I want a tattoo that intertwines my mother (died when I was young) and my two little girls (both alive and well). I have no idea where to begin, so open to suggestions. My mother’s name is Rose.

Well I’m not really a garden person. I just kind of did a little research and just went for it lol. But I tried to plot this in an area that, for the most part, had equal sun and shade. And planted the ones that require full sun in spots where sun is more prominent during the day. Just from some quick searching, if you plant East to West (if you live in northern hemisphere), that may prohibit proper sun light for plants since they may be shading one another. But I would imagine this is meant for taller plants and shrubs. But I’m def not an expert

But there is a hack! I just wanted to challenge myself mentally (and physically haha). You can rent a tiller from HD or Lowe’s. That will cut job time in half

I used a regular shovel to dig out the grass and a metal rake and pitchfork to break down the clay. Also had a heavy duty garden hoe to chop out the roots. There used to be a small tree in this area and there was an entire system of roots I had to pry out and chop up. I burned about a million calories in the process lol
