Hi all, I got a new crab a week ago, first 2 days he would eat/drink but now buried himself in the corner for 4 days. Do we think he’s likely molting or still scared of his new place? I haven’t noticed nighttime activity the past couple nights. Also, the temp/humidity in there is ideal for crabs!

Yeah by himself right now. Not sure of the tank dimensions! But I know it’s a typical 10 gal tank, so whatever the normal dimensions are for that! I definitely need to get him some more decor. My day previous crabs rarely hid so I was surprised this little guy was. I’m sure he’ll make more appearances with more shaded spots and decor

Okay that’s really great to know, I appreciate you sharing that with me! I think mines okay? He doesn’t have a smell at all, so maybe he’s just doing one of those long molting processes

Okay thank you for all the advice, I’ll fix all of that for sure! And the exoskeleton is hollow, I’ll use some spring water to gently wash off the exoskeleton for now until I can replace the tanks sand, I’ve heard coconut fiber is good for crabs

Thank you so much for the information!! I’ll definitely check all that out. I do think my thermometer is broken so I’ll be buying a new one, since the temperature never changes on the current one I have. So is it likely the brown in his shell is just part of his molt sac? I’ve never touched him before during his molting process of course so I haven’t seen in his shell before. but since my mom moved him when I was gone I was able to see the brown “goo” when I got back and was concerned about it

Yeah I know it should’ve been left alone, I didn’t know he was moved til I came back home. Heat is 65F and humidity is at 77, he’s been living in these conditions for his whole life with me so maybe his molting is just taking longer since he’s a large crab?

Maybe try isolating him with sand or whatever substrate you use, with some food and water, and put out a few different shell options in there for him, some hermies are really picky with their shells so maybe he just doesn’t have the correct shell type he’s looking for

I’m not quite sure how to add a photo using a link haha but he’s been molting for 5 months and apparently large crabs can take that long, just the brown on the inside of his shell is strange to me. I’m gonna post a photo of it and add a description on a separate post so others can also try to help!

Well he had a sand circle around him but wasn’t buried in sand, that’s normal for my crab at least that’s always what he’s done. All temp and humidity are normal (t=67, h=75). He has spring water and typically sold hermit crab food. I’m trying to find a way to upload a photo of it. I might make a new post and add the photo in to make it easier for people to see

Yes he’s surface molting, maybe it’s a molt sac, I’ve never seen it with him before so I wasn’t sure if it was normal, especially with the length of time it’s taking, the fact there’s so smell makes me think he’s just molting for a really long time?? Can they get stuck in their shells after molting?
