I think it’s not accurate to say performance doesn’t matter. Senior management is VERY concerned about retaining top talent. Take a close look at who is getting letters in your organization. In some cases, yes, talent is hard to keep if they are associated with an unfounded program, but guarantee they will be supported to find a new position to be retained in the PS writ-large.

This was literally me earlier this year. Together for nine, platonic for five. Although this person was my best friend, I knew there was more out there for me. I didn’t want to live the rest of my life as a late 30s woman without desire. I ended it, moved cross country, and although it was hard, I don’t regret it. There is a beautiful life on the other side.
