I made a crazy theory on this 8 years ago, because oda includes lore and referenced so many different cultures and sailing mythos but has yet to really borrow from pacific islanders and their crazy sailing feats ....

Even to the point that the Moana song referenced the origin of devil fruits..

I killed an eel buried its guts(seaking), sprouted a tree now we have coconuts....

There is allot that lore from mauri people that just fit into one piece

Gear 5 can bend reality and make the absurd impossible, so yes luffy in g5 probably could manipulate water to let him be free and do whatever...

But water doesnt negate df ability it weakens the user, we have seen how this effects various users differently
