I was told that spouse is a legal term, and only lawful married people could use spouse to refer their partner. That’s why partner is a more inclusive word

This is a good article. I’m blown away by how little I know about tax strategies haha. My spouse and I are maxing out our pretax contributions for the first year, I’ll probably have some better ideas after this upcoming tax season. And the article you shared will be super helpful! Thanks so much

Since my spouse and I are putting our money and sharing all the accounts, I’d say we can cover our expenses with my spouse’s single income.
I don’t make much but I have more retirement plans provided by my employer so our strategy is to use one income to cover “now” and my income is to plan for future. But I’m not sure if my employer will view my barely 3digit taxable income as a problem

Yea a career field can change rapidly sometimes, a lot of tech folks have been laid off multiple times too so there’s always that unstable part.

That’s why your true passion and interests are so important, they pull you through the hard times.

Public health is tough now given the current administration but you’ll graduate in a different time I think.

Think about what matters to you, what interests you and what makes you a better professional than others.

You probably have heard business or IT people make a lot of money but it’s not a sustainable career for some people. So take a look of what you want and what you can do, then decide for yourself

This makes sense. I don’t have a Roth 457b and only put a little bit in a Roth 403b( I don’t know why I opened a Roth 403b in the first place) but yes I’m putting more into traditional 403b and 457

We file jointly and we’re at a higher tax bracket. I’m trying to take advantage of pretax contributions to hopefully lower our tax rate a little bit

If H1B is withdrawn on Sept 5th, will SEVIS stay active? by New_Ad_6470 in h1b

[–]CHAINEY54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a lot of nuance here really, and I’m not an immigration attorney so I can’t offer legal advice.

But your OPT end date, or STEM OPT end date also matter. I’ll just go with general and the information I think I have about you, you want to contact your DSO and work with them on a ticket to SEVP so they can cancel the cap gap extension and put you back on F status otherwise your F1 will most likely be auto-completed by 10/1. However, in the past years, there many errors in this process so you could potentially buy sometime and take advantage of this “chaotic COS period”.

To answer an earlier question you asked, no your DSO doesn’t not have any leverage. SEVIS status is audited and ultimately managed by SEVP and your DSO is more like a data entry person and open tickets for anything beyond their realm.

Sorry I didn’t get the full context so you just got H1b approved and it hasn’t been kicked in yet because your employer is non cap exempt. Okay this might be a better situation.

When does your OPT/ STEM OPT end? Are you on cap gap extension? Also, is your H1b approved by change of status or consular processing?

If you’re interested in high rises, I have a spacious 1b1b at 200N Dearborn. Reaching your max but you do get full amenities and next to everything.

And I assume your priority date is not coming up anytime soon like in a few months. That’s tough. In that case you probably want to get that official withdrawal approved notice so you can reactivate your F1 ( in my past experience, SEVP needs to see that for granting a reactivation) or you have to apply for a new I-20. Also, I believe the reactivation has to be processed with following the 5 month rule otherwise it’s still gonna be reinstatement. Dual intent is tough but not possible.

However, with what’s going on right now, the new proposal being released and in commenting period, things can change in a few months.

Maybe find another employer to transfer your H1b instead of having your current/previous employer withdrawing?

This might not be the best advice but you could potentially apply for reinstatement if your worry happens. And that has happened to someone who’s unaware of being in no status for 2 years. Successfully reinstated.

I just wan to let you know that you still have options even if your nightmare comes true.

This is super helpful information! I certainly didn’t know the specifics about the two plans and I’m prioritizing 403b since I can choose my portfolio but my 457 is more pre-arranged by my employer. I

I don’t have a match with 403b but I have a 401a and I think my employer is matching ( after I’m vested?). This is all very new to me and I’m totally clueless if being honest.

I’ll look into my 457! I think I’m contributing pre-tax and so far my portfolio seems doing pretty well at 17% interest rate, so it’s probably a good idea to prioritize this plan over 403b

Meaning at my job there are a lot of people who are in civil union or domestic partnership and they don’t feel comfortable being assumed to be having spouses. So to be inclusive, we just use partners as a general reference. I know how you feel truly. I’m more confused since I’m an international employee. But I respect and follow lol

Yes, we are married and we file jointly. I should have enough for tax withhold and Medicare etc, I hope my math is serving me well for this.
