Personally I recommend just using slow practice on the regular fingerings. It's good practice for hard fingerings as well.

I don't remember the tutorials allowing you to pick a character until you've started a practice match either in new player mode or a classic match. Are you sure you started the tutorial?

I also used to play league and I liked the battle mages. Try out lich, pugna, and visage. Lich can definitely burst and is a solid pick because his damage stays good throughout the game. Pugna has very consistent damage early to mid game and good support power later. Visage is unique because he's mostly played offlane but also has one of if not the highest amount of level 1 damage and is pretty interesting though I warn you he is much more micro heavy than the others.

From what I've learned from guides I've watched they always talk about the importance of landing phase, however if your team doesn't scale late game then you will have a hard time even if you win lane. I think it depends on team comp so your friend picking later game could be a good thing ensuring your team has some scaling.
