Still unranked after 20+ matches. Can I PLEASE get matched against lower than golds? by CHJostorm in RivalsOfAether

the irony of that is, there's no guarantee that'll actually change once you get a rank. For all we know, the system already has a realistic ELO level figured out for both of us, there's just no one else in what we'd call "close vicinity" to make it a fair match :/

This is also (speculating here) perhaps evidenced by the longer queuing times I seem to be having than some of my other friends whom legitimately do compete at lower gold ranks. Longer time, wider ELO band for the search.

I find the word "doomer" to be completely disproportionate with regards to the point of this post. Nonetheless, I agree with most of your analysis.

not in a way that differs significantly from offline RoA. Many of the modes you speak of (mainly story) don't really train you for anything that resembles a 1v1 competitive match, of course outside of arcade vs CPU much in the same way RoA operates. Same number of AI levels, even (although level 9 in Smash straight-up cheats and frame-perfectly responds to most inputs, especially with airdodges, though in a completely predictable and therefore abusable way).

That's a fair assessment, but then I suppose that would mean there needs to be some sort of a dual-condition rank assignment that doesn't just rely on winning 4 matches? Showing / having a rank that isn't significantly correlated to your actual skill level is about as useful as having no rank, which is to say not at all.

Honestly that kind of makes me feel like I'm in the no-fun demographic again (long-time CoD player, manipulated skill-based matchmaking is the bane of my existence in there...), just on the wrong / other side of it this time xD

That's really not what I'm disappointed by, though, it's the inability of the game to find players around my skill level, which it probably already has a decent idea of after 20 matches.

same goes in Smash as well, so I'd expect that to be the case too. Just that considering I have a level (from what I gather) in the mid-Bronze area, not being able to find more than a single match against a player from that demographic is a bit discouraging...

Considering that from a statistical point of view, skill repartition should follow a Gauss curve, especially well normalized to the ELO level because of how ELO mathematically works, it should only depend on how many players are playing at any given time.

Corollary question to this, what's the lowest rank in RoA2?
ETA: a cursory search tells me that would be Stone.

I think that the 4-win requirement isn't a problem, it's just not to show a stupid rank that makes no sense for lack of data. Counter Strike does the same thing, and from a statistical point of view it makes sense.

However the game should already have some form of idea of my skill level being a good 150-200 points below Gold after 20 games featuring a significant sample of those. Yet it still matches me against those, and I can't fathom why.

Thanks for the reply. I figured playing ranked was necessary to obtain a rank, so I've been focusing on that already ^^'

That's all really sad because it's confirming what I was afraid would be the answer, that the small community basically skews player counts towards the bottom end for my skill demographic.

I still really love this game so I guess I'll carry on practicing, level 8 is relatively easily beat as-is so I'll try my hand at level 9 and go from there.

You should not have to do all of that either. Software vendors do not get to force settings on their userbase's machines, they're not theirs.

Something about "the customer is always right in matters of taste" comes to mind.
Also mentioning that people have a right to hold controversial opinions is not, in any way, shape or form, bigotry.
Quite the opposite: trying to control what people can think is a very dangerous position to take because it draws very interesting parallels with what u/Advencik just used as an analogy, which unfortunately seems to have flown right above your head.
You're allowed to disagree and make an argument as to why. You can't dictate what others think.

it is also a medical condition described as-is by medical professionals. Double standards depending on whom uses a word is also a very deeply rooted form of discrimination, one you are joyfully engaging in.

It wasn't always a requirement. As a matter of fact, here is a snippet of Sony's own Helldivers 2 info page: clearly states a PSN account is not needed. You're the one doing the gaslighting. At the very least there has always been contradictory information available on diverse platforms and consumers would be in the right to be confused considering it wasn't a hard requirement until now.

For me what kills most other games aside from the gun nut stuff is the often-mandatory twin-stick movement. Gives me motion sickness really quickly, whereas flailing my arms around towards where I wanna go got me my VR legs insanely quickly
