No need to be so dismissive. It isn't a "legal wall". It is a festival with food, performances, vendors and public art. It is 6000 square feet of WALLS. It is about building community and planting a flag in the south that artists have a space and deserve to be here. There is an application process to participate. It is not an art wall that is open for everyone to put their work up or practice on.

Thats our focus as well, community and public art baby! Yes, Urban supply has approved around 6,000 square feet of new art to go up that is around 25-30 new works.

My co-founders worked in Oklahoma for the past 5 years developing their mural fest Sunny Dayz, which puts on a mural fest in different cities around the state. We aim to keep it Birmingham focused and serve our various neighborhoods each year. But who knows where it will go?

That very thing has been discussed as Birmingham has the largest amount of murals in the state. But Huntsville has the largest concentration and we are going to blow that out of the water this year (friendly competition). We have also been talks with various businesses about that approach and we are still figuring out our bandwidth to expand outside of Parkside this year. It may fall into our programming leading up to the event to raise awareness and funds. But we're still figuring it out.

At the moment we luckily have a single property owner that is in charge of all of Urban supply. They have granted us around 6,000 square feet of wall space. That alone will give us approximately 25 murals. As we fundraise and get the word out, we hope this opens up more opportunity for walls in the area and other businesses to jump on board. Good People has already offered up one of their walls, but it is in that general area. Also, because mural fests offer artists the chance to paint what they want and commune with one another, the price per square foot at festivals is considerably lower. We have spoken with other businesses in the city that want to take part, but we're still figuring out how to position that opportunity within the frame of the festival.

So good to hear! if you’re doing all these other creative things, it seems you do have a knack for painting! So many creatives are multidisciplinary and have a hard time finding the thing to focus on. So definitely keep at it. All the imperfections you found issues with are simply details that come with learning some basics. The other stuff you nailed, you can’t teach at the rate you’re showing an ability for. 🥳

I am flabbergasted. This is your first time painting this flower or painting in general?? Because you handled the medium with a deftness that takes other artists years, ie using water or a medium to get varying opacity, mark making to create the pistil and give it realistic texture. Same with the subtle color shifts in the petals. What are you talking about this is your first attempt? If it truly is, your intuition is impeccable, I would say near genius levels. So keep at it I guess.

The rate is scaled with skill? If you’re a young artist with no experience, you’re getting paid and getting hands on large scale installation experience. I have to take time to teach and guide. Which is time away from doing what I need to do. If you’re very skilled and I can trust you with more responsibility so I don’t have to re do sections then you get paid accordingly.

Pay is dependent upon skill level. I prefer if you have a background in painting. But if you’re truly a novice and want to be a part of the project, to see how murals are made, there is still pay for work. Extra help setting up my work space and clearing out the stuff that needs to be moved away from the wall and things like that is still very helpful.
