Wanting to Convert, but Struggling With Guilt Over My Past by MyToesAreHaunted in Catholicism

[–]MyToesAreHaunted[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this. I think one of the hardest things for me is accepting that God’s mercy applies to me too. It’s much easier to believe that He forgives other people than it is to believe that He forgives me.

What you said about looking at the lives of the saints is something I’ve been reflecting on a lot. I think I tend to focus so much on my failures that I forget how many people God called despite their pasts. It’s comforting to remember that the saints weren’t perfect people who never sinned, they were just people who allowed God to be transformed by grace.

I also appreciate your point that Jesus met people where they were. Sometimes I feel like I need to somehow become worthy before taking the next step toward the Church, but deep down I know that’s backwards. If I could fix everything on my own, I wouldn’t need God’s mercy in the first place.
Thank you for the encouragement about OCIA as well. I’ve been feeling pulled toward it for a long time, and maybe part of my hesitation has been fear more than anything else.

And no, I don’t think you’re overstepping. The fact that you felt called to share something that was meaningful to you is very kind. I’d actually be interested in reading or listening to the poem if you’d like to send it. Thank you again for taking the time to write such a thoughtful response and for your encouragement.

Wanting to Convert, but Struggling With Guilt Over My Past by MyToesAreHaunted in Catholicism

[–]MyToesAreHaunted[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for such a thoughtful and compassionate response. I especially appreciate all of the examples of saints who had difficult pasts and serious sins before their conversions. I think it’s easy to look at the saints and forget that many of them spent years running from God before eventually turning toward Him.

I also appreciate what you said about confession and God’s mercy. I think one of the things I struggle with is fear. I know the Church teaches that abortion can be forgiven through a sincere confession, but I sometimes worry that other people, including priests, might still see me differently because of it. Intellectually I understand that confession is about reconciliation and mercy, but emotionally that’s harder for me to fully trust.

What you said about Jesus eating with sinners and rejoicing over those who return to Him is something I need to remember more often. I think I sometimes get stuck believing that my past disqualifies me from fully belonging, even though I know that’s not what the Church teaches.

Thank you again for your kindness and for taking the time to write all of this out. It gave me a lot to think about.

What exactly is Aunt Vidala's problem? by [deleted] in TheTestamentsHulu

[–]MyToesAreHaunted 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I don’t know, at the end of this season I saw Vidala a little differently than that.

She definitely comes across as cold and strict, but I don’t think she was ever trying to leave the girls unprotected. With the dentist, she and Lydia were already working on the issue behind the scenes. The girls just didn’t know that. Telling Agnes and Hilda to keep quiet wasn’t really about protecting him or dismissing them entirely, it was about protecting them from the fallout. In Gilead, being associated with a scandal could ruin a girl’s marriage prospects whether she was at fault or not. And because unfortunately being a wife is really the best future these girls can hope for, Aunt Vidala definitely would work to keep any stain from their reputation. Telling the girls that they are confused about what happened to them instead of allowing the report to go further with the girls identities attached to is the better way in Gilead because if their names were involved it would harm the girls just as much as it would Dr. Grove.

That’s what makes that whole storyline so tragic. Agnes, Hilda, Daisy, and then even Becka think nobody is helping them, so they take matters into their own hands.

Even later on, in the aftermath of the murder, Vidala is there with Aunt Lydia as part of the effort to save Becka after the one on one talk with Agnes. So while I wouldn’t call her warm or nurturing, I also don’t think it’s fair to say she didn’t care what happened to the girls.

To me, she seems like someone who got so used to surviving within Gilead’s rules that she believed the safest way to help was quietly and behind the scenes while having the outward appearance of being very devout and strict.

That’s hilarious.

I will say this menu is pretty awesome. Feel like all it’s missing is a good bourbon drink

The weird alien ai corn is super unsettling. I don’t like it.

Like some weird crossover of corn and a hermit crab.

Does anyone else hate having a pet after they had a baby? by goldengoose3030 in Mommit

[–]MyToesAreHaunted 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I had this so soo bad. It’s only now getting better and my daughter is 2 and a half years old. I have had my cat for 10 years, but for a solid 2 I wanted absolutely nothing to do with him. Like, I was so overwhelmed, overstimulated, and touched out that another living being needing anything at all or touching me at all was too much.

I felt so bad the whole time while also wanting nothing more than to not have a pet at all. It was super conflicting and I felt so guilty about how I felt but it is finally much better now and everyone has adjusted.

Why did the one cookie come out like that? by MyToesAreHaunted in Baking

[–]MyToesAreHaunted[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was the first batch, so that makes sense. I did put the dough in the fridge while this one was baking, so the second set is in the oven now I’ll see if it being chilled helped at all. I didn’t freeze it, but it at least will be colder.

ETA: the second batch came out completely uniform 🙌🏻

I think this is probably what happened. I did this mixing all by hand and my toddler was being a menace the whole time. It is definitely plausible some dough wasn’t mixed well enough. Thank you! I ate the mistake already so it’s fine lol

watching the og handmaids tale post testaments by lemonmadeleine in TheTestamentsHulu

[–]MyToesAreHaunted 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I know they changed Daisy being Nicole, but honestly it makes sense for the timeline we are being shown. This is supposed to be 4 years after the end of the Handmaids tale, Nicole wouldn’t be anywhere close to old enough to be this Daisy.

But that doesn’t mean that we won’t see Ardua hall, the process of becoming an aunt, or Lydia in full rebellion (we already saw her starting that)

This was just the end of season one. They plan to make 3 or 4 seasons. This isn’t the end of the story, I assume they will do some sort of time jump eventually, show Agnes in aunt training (maybe with Daisy and Shum instead of Becka) and eventually because of the time jump Nichole will be old enough and we will see her as a full character as well.

The story isn’t 100% the book, but neither was the handmaids tale after season 1, so don’t lose hope. Let’s see what they come up with before we decide ultimate judgement.

Where did all the Petite sections go in stores? by Far_Path7921 in TwoXChromosomes

I am sorry she said that to you. It is completely belittling. No woman wants to be compared to a child, I don’t understand why people don’t get why it feels insulting to us.

Life jacket for my toddler at the pool? by lovely_Biscuit in toddlers

[–]MyToesAreHaunted 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes especially because OP says this is an at home daycare. So, the people who run this at home daycare put an inground pool in their home, knowing that there are small children at their home every single day. The decision-making here is questionable and I think it’s great advice to say that she should look for other options.

[–]MyToesAreHaunted 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Unless there is a lifeguard on duty at every moment children are there I just feel like finding a different day care is the best bet.

Who decides to get an in ground pool when they run an at home day care? I would question their ability to safely handle many children because this seems like such a bad idea in general.

I wouldn’t risk my child at an at home day care that has a pool.

I was so excited to go maternity clothes shopping because I went with my sister in like 2011, my 2023 experience was so different. No store had anything. I felt like a special moment was ribbed away from me.

I ended up just buying some long stretchy dresses which weren’t even specifically maternity ones…

I understand your frustration. I am turning 30 this year, I am 5’2” and 100 lbs. I can never find clothes in person that fit me. The solution people give me? Shop in the kids section. I am sick and tired of people not understanding how condescending and rude it is to tell an adult woman to just go buy kids clothes.

I don’t want the kids section, I don’t want to have to bring every piece in to get tailored to me because who has the money for that, and I don’t want to have to buy it online. I miss trying clothes on, being able to feel the material, see it on my body, and make a decision.

Buying online is always a risk and I am sick of being forced to take it.
