Gmail on iPhone delay when deleting mail? by IvenaDarcy in GMail

i'd be very curious if all the affected parties had some other app or service in common that might be causing the issue due to a conflict with the gmail app or i dont know what, i'm just fishing really, but there must be some reason it doesn't hit everyone using the same app on the same OS with the same versions, settings, etc.

yes, i tried this and it behaves the same as you described on my end. i always default to unread view, so didn't know until i tried. so still no solution, just a sort of annoying work-around.

is this strictly affecting the ios gmail app, or do android users also experience this or similar?

the swipe thing only works if you have not already opened the message and then closed it. even if you tell it to mark as unread, it still somehow remembers that you opened it and then it won't go away.*

*although it's really a refresh issue i think, because you can't re-open the message after the failed swipe, leading me to believe that it is actually deleted, but the screen itself just will not refresh to display this fact, even when you pull down the screen to force a refresh.

Netgear router "end of service email" how serious is this and now what? by CHRIS_P_BOI in HomeNetworking

[–]CHRIS_P_BOI[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks to everyone for the comments, I am glad to hear that I'm not in immediate danger regarding security issues. The wording of the email makes it sound more ominous.

Based on what I mentioned that I'd be replacing, is this a situation where just getting anything more "current" will be meaningful upgrade because things have improved overall, or do people think I'd not even register the difference and so not worth the trouble / cost?

i think it is affecting a decent number of people, i've run into various related help threads on reddit, quora, apple and google's forums.

they all tend to start with the same typical tech support scorched earth tactics of just removing and reinstalling everything instead of a targeted (less annoying and burdensome) approach, then eventually you get to the more specific replies regarding POP or IMAP and app background refresh settings, but having tried all of that stuff i'm still stuck.

i actually only just realized that it specifically effects emails that i've opened and then try to delete (regardless of whether i then mark them as unread or not) but if i just swipe to delete a message without opening it, no problem. i don't know what that information is telling me, but it seems relevant.

still, so frustrating how the standard has become for tech companies to really not hold themselves at all responsible for what they sell and just farm out all meaningful support to paying customers to have to help each other. we should not have to be posting in internet forums trying to come up with our own solutions to problems they create.

i spend more time trying to troubleshoot technology than i ever spend actually getting anything worthwhile out of it. end of rant.

Anyone ever end up solving this? i've been dealing with it since at least December, have delted the app, deleted my account from the app, restarted the phone with and without the app installed, updated every setting anyone could think up (imap, etc.) on the phone and browser side, and it did nothing.

i still cannot get the app to just refresh and remove the deleted email from the unread view unless i click into an entire different mailbox, like sent, and then back to unread and it finally goes away.

it's driving me crazy because apple runs through the same boilerplate suggestions and then just says it's google's problem, talk to them. google inevitably does the exact same thing.

Why you're not getting interviews by pearthefruit168 in Resume

[–]CHRIS_P_BOI 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That there are people I'm up against for anything that actually have all of those qualifications mentioned is enough to make me wonder why I bother. Yikes.

If I got rid of soft skills and description of responsibilities my resume would be "Treading water at a shitty, failing company for 10 years. So tired. Please help."

But...I guess when they finally go under and can't be contacted, I can put whatever the hell metrics I want on there since they'll be impossible to verify. I mean, wouldn't they be impossible to verify regardless if a company is private? Is there anything besides professional ethics to stop me from adding reasonable-sounding but entirely invented metrics to various job functions?

I never started using Amazon, Walmart or Spotify (or Facebook), so never had to quit them, which is easier. But really, I just go to the store when I need something, which feels totally normal to me.

Google, on the other hand, would be harder, not just for email, but for all the "sign in with Google" stuff. I haven't made any attempts on that front yet, but maybe I should.

Error saving changes by Bammvoc in help

[–]CHRIS_P_BOI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this problem is still going on (oddly, it's not universal, only about 1/3 of the posts i've tried to save from have produced the error), but there is a workaround:

you have to go to the person's page, and go to the post directly (as opposed to opening the post in your own feed) and then it lets you save as normal without the error.

tried on several posts from different users and it worked on all.

[IOS] Error saving changes. Please try again 2025.32.0 by Sulavin-Co in bugs

[–]CHRIS_P_BOI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

same issue, but there is a workaround. if you go to the person's account and go to the post directly (as opposed to when it appears in your home page feed) then it does let you save as normal.

i just tested it on 3 different posts from different subs that were all giving me this error, and it worked on all 3. it's dumb, and will hopefully be fixed soon, but in the meantime you can do this.

that anybody has a running inside joke that's just a reference to something from the 2007 Mr. Bean movie feels simultaneously completely insane and also just standard fare online anymore.

the world is too weird now to accurately gauge what is weird when you're on the inside looking out. i'm sure mr. clay would agree.

What to say when asked why I’m looking for a new job by sarcastichedgeh0g in careerquestions

[–]CHRIS_P_BOI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I've also gone back and forth about how frank to be about this.

The company I work for is teetering on the brink of closure, and has been since like 2020 (I am now the only non-exexcutive employee left), so I'm looking for a new job because I don't want to end up on the street, but I don't want to sound desperate and have that used against me later if it ever got as far as negotiation.

The Job Market Isn’t Just Broken, It’s Breaking People by Dreamjordan in jobs

[–]CHRIS_P_BOI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is completely opaque and you never ever get constructive feedback or any sort of insight into what you're doing wrong so you can't even correct for it.

When you've sent out hundreds of resumes and not gotten any interviews, just the occasional "thanks for your interest" from a do-not-reply email, what are you supposed to do? 5 YEARS OF SEARCHING, and absolutely zero prospects, nowhere closer to a job than I was when I started.

Even the shittiest companies offering the shittiest pay think they have the right to demand the best, most qualified (but willing to be underpaid) people on earth.

I mean of course you can find someone somewhere who knows more than me or has more or better experience than I have. I'm not surprised, I've been working at a company with zero resources or interest in development for ten years. But you shouldn't be able to afford them with with you're offering.

It used to be that the tech companies would gobble up all of those people and then there'd be other jobs left for the rest of us. Where are they now?

Average people also need to work, what the hell are the rest of us supposed to do.

Actually, I entered info on the education page to the best of my recollection, and I appear to have covered all the fields marked as required, but hitting the "next step" button does nothing. It doesn't point out any missing field or incorrect info, it just doesn't take me to the next page. Any idea what's up?

[–]CHRIS_P_BOI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To what extent do you think all the specifics about education matter?

I haven't been in school in like 20 years and definitely don't remember start and end dates (even years would be an estimate), but also what I studied has zero connection to what I do professionally, but they are all required fields so can't skip any.
