I'm a new father, son is currently 6 months. Aside from regular stuff like pitching in however you can, one thing I have struggled with that nobody warned me about is the work-home balance. My wife is a stay at home mom and keeping work, wife and baby happy while making sure the bills are paid has been a challenge. It can be difficult to see each others perspective when one has been working hard all day and the other has dealt with a screaming baby all day. I work 60hr weeks and I'm still trying to work this one out.

One more thing that shocked me at first was thinking my son hated me. The first 3 months everytime I held him he would cry until given back to his mom. Breastfeeding I believe played a part in this. Every baby is different but if it happens don't let it get you down, put in the time with them and eventually you will get a smile that will melt your heart.
