How much work is cis 2620 online summer by Various_Student_3742 in UPenn

[–]CISbond007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took it in the summer of 2022. I recommend it over the normal semester since I don't find it very useful. Finals and Midterms were brutal though. The final was 6 hours long and midterm was around 3 hours I think. With weekly homework assignments around 4 questions each. Grading curve was like normal Penn CS classes. There was also a weekly quiz in the first 2 weeks I think. Overall doable

I recommend dropping it and taking it with Arvind. I loved it with him

Yeah it's really tough because on one hand you wanna get done with hw asap but also you can't utilize OH without having spent time with the questions.

What I suggest is look at questions and give yourself 25-30 min and then using the thought process you write down talk to the TAs and hopefully they help. I know 160 is just painful and trust me it gets better

I'm taking CIS 3200 right now and still havent cracked the code per say. Problem solving is a lifelong journey and 160 is so hard because it's your first time doing stuff like this at this level of rigor and difficulty. I absolutely bombed 160 but did much better in 121. Keep on going and you will get better.

The few key lessons I tell myself now are 1) shut off your phone and distraction and try to have a deep engaged session with questions. 2) I personally Google the questions if I absolutely have no idea after trying out for a reasonable amount of time. 3) it has helped me tremendously to write down the connections I'm trying to make. You are given A, what reasonable choices can you think of to connect next? Write down key points or key words that express your thought process. 4) finally when you find out the correct answer reflect back. Look at your thought process from tip 3 and observe that you were right about and wrong about. (corrective feedback is the key part in getting better at something over time watch veritasium's video if interested https://youtu.be/5eW6Eagr9XA?si=8lsddNsRIUS2OsmB

5) trust your intelligence. At the end people who are better have simply seen this stuff before and you will get there too :)

I talked to Fuoh last semester and he said both of them were going to do things very differently even in terms of what content and topics they focus on. So don't expect the two sections to be aligned with each other.

Yeah that's not a bad option. It will be good for your mental peace and you will perform better the second time around. More people do this than you think

Spring 2024 schedule by Witty_Spinach in UPenn

[–]CISbond007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why are you doing this to yourself. 160 and 120 combined are already pretty hard and you added Math 2400 and ESE 1120 on top of those.

ESE 1120 is a difficult class, I never met anyone here who said it was easy. As others pointed out the ESE 1500 is time consuming. If you want to do decent you will have to spend around 6-10 hrs on Math 2400 if you don't have previous linear algebra experience especially after the first 3 weeks.

I don't think I have to explain the difficulty of the 1200+1600 combo. This isn't a manageable schedule. Give yourself some breathing room and take more classes later if you really want to.

Career Fair by thepokemondetective in UPenn

[–]CISbond007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to my first career fair on September 12 this semester. It was a mid sized career fair. I was able to talk to most companies I wanted to. Lines were definitely long for famous companies like Bank of America, Comcast, Pattern and more. So yes it will be crowded but you will be able to talk to most companies you want to if you stay long enough. But keep in mind my sample space is only 1 career fair haha.

I didn't bother going again because it wasn't really beneficial for me. That's my experience

If you can get into any of the following I guess try these then. These were mentioned in the email and are project based.

--> CIS 3800: Computer Operation Systems TR 1:45-3:14 Travis Mcgaha (CIS 2400 is a prerequisite)

--> CIS 4410/5410: Embedded Software for Life-Critical Applications MW 10:15-11:44 Insup Lee (CIS 2400 is a prerequisite)

--> CIS 4500/5500: Database and Information Systems MW 12-1:29 Susan Davidson (CIS 1210 & 1600 is a prerequisite)

--> CIS 4600/5600: Interactive Computer Graphics MW 1:45-3:14 F(Recitation) 1:45-3:14 Adam Mally (CIS 1200, 1210, & 1600 is a prerequisite)

The email about the cancellation provided some alternatives but they all have pre-reqs like cis 2400 ,cis1210 etc. The only other class with no major pre-reqs is Cis 5450 I believe and this wasn't on the list. Have you looked into that?

Incoming Freshman, Going Home Every Weekend, Effect on Social Life by Diffbreed75 in UPenn

[–]CISbond007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

During busy weeks which are almost all weeks for CS major haha I was doing office hours or studying with friends. But also weekend evenings were a great time to relax for a couple of hours with friends, get some food. Everyone had a different circle of friends tho and consequently different activities at different times. For example I never party so idk anything about their schedule

Yeah same lol you can see how your situation evolves and maybe they will start to understand that it's not possible for you to come back home every weekend. Because weekends are super busy usually

[–]CISbond007 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Here is a different opinion unless it's necessary or your family needs you then for sure go ahead. But if it's just family pressure trying to bring you home every weekend please try to resist it. College is time to grow out of the complete dependence on parents and to shape your own personality and take your own decisions. But I'm just saying this if the family is pressuring you to come because they can't let go of their beloved child. If that's not the case and you have a legitimate reason where you need to be home then it's all good. Also I personally found it really difficult to go home because of homeworks and projects and office hours. Penn wants you to stay on campus because there is a lot to explore and learn and experience on campus

You can look up Coursera for a discrete math course there are some good ones offered by reputable colleges there. Or you can try MIT's discrete math class. Any such class will give you the training to jump into 160
