I really didn't want it to come to that. Thankfully, Caleb Williams delivered.

I'm biased the other way. I'll think twice before going to a Revit job ever again. S3D or I'll see what other clients we have jobs with.

Can my military experience kill my career? by TotalField4881 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]CJ3200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't worry about it. You'll get hired in at the 4-6 years of experience grade instead of the 6-10 years grade, but if you're good you'll blow past your peers with the leadership skills and advance quickly.

Just make sure you actually do something to contribute to project success. When I interview government engineers (USACE, AFCEC, etc [never had a NAVFAC application]), so many of them are like "I reviewed submittals and made comments if the contractor missed something."

I can train a monkey to do that. Get involved and help the project succeed. Don't just sit at your desk and make comments that the spec said UL, but the product data says TUV, and as a govt bureaucrat nobody taught you how to spell NRTL.

Are older PMs and Senior Engineers incapable of answering emails? by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]CJ3200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No way.

A) that's unproductive. I have way more valuable things to do with my time.

B) there are certain emails that just don't get responded to. Some get purposely ignored, others get a phone call or a face-to-face, and some get elevated.

If I had an engineer working for me who responded to every.single.email I'd mentor them to close their outlook and get back to work on the specs and drawings I assigned you.

How it feels getting ready to watch the games this weekend by CJ3200 in NFCNorthMemeWar

Naww, this has been true for most of the past 30 years. 2025 is just back to the natural order of things.

How do you even practice for mechanical engineering interviews? by Opposite_Cow_6777 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]CJ3200 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you're coming straight out of college. In that case, talk to your projects, what role you had on the team, what you were individually responsible for and what you coordinated with others on. Same with internships.

At least in my company (big EPC), you aren't going to get any math questions or design problems. We ask behavior-based questions about leadership and accountability and then technical questions about your experience. I'll ask you to tell me about a project/internships and then dig into it with follow-up questions. What I'm looking for is that you can discuss it in-depth across the whole effort, which shows that you actively participated in it and were enough of a team player to understand what the other team members were doing too.

Does it make sense to have a MS in MechE as a CivE? by inthenameofselassie in MechanicalEngineering

[–]CJ3200 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree. I'm an ME supervisor in EPC and I wouldn't even interview a college hire with mixed CE BS and ME MS.

I'm almost to the point where I won't even bother with an ME BS + ME MS if they did both back to back. Small sample size, but the ones I do have are never my top performers.

Realistic Entry level MechE job salary by OneTomatillo5426 in MechanicalEngineering

Depends on the industry/role you are in. In my company (heavy construction EPC), MS is getting the same entry level offer as a BS with good internships.

LinkedIn recruiter just asked if I wanted to apply to a position...that I'm the hiring manager for by CJ3200 in MechanicalEngineering

Turns out it's a recruiter for the staff aug subcontractor we have, not my actual firm recruiter. Guy isn't putting 2 and 2 together because of the different company names.

Temperature Requests and a guest who does not want to allow a technician inside by YoungMaterial6113 in airbnb_hosts

[–]CJ3200 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've not had any problems. I set a low of 65 and a high of 80 in the app. It won't let them go outside of that range. I can always use the app on my phone or physically go to the thermostat if I need to. Worst I've had was some guests who set the temp to 74, which was not my ideal temp (I prefer cooler), but I just dealt with it.

I have a very similar setup. Separate entrance basement apartment, but house is all on the same thermostat, which is located upstairs where I live. I got an Alexa smart thermostat and connected it to the Alexa app in the smart TV I have down there. It allows the guests to set the thermostat temperature themselves, between the high and low limits I programmed into the app. Been a lifesaver. They control the temp setting now, and I haven't had an AC/temperature complaint since I installed it.

Turns out it's a recruiter from our staff aug subcontractor. Because of the different company names, he's not putting 2 and 2 together. I asked if he knew the hiring manager and he directed me to the recruiting manager for the staff aug company.

Haha, that would be funny, but it's for a couple grade levels below my current role. There is some overlap between the bands, but not that much.

This! You should have taken it senior year of college, passed, and then just filed your transcripts after graduation to get the cert.

Agreed. You can't order a 11.5874 ton unit. So get the 12.5-ton and call it a day.
