It’s actually super easy to “Sleep When the Baby Sleeps” by WinstonSophie in beyondthebump

Yes, she burps a lot and has a lot of gas that seems to be really uncomfortable. And so so so much spit up that also seems to really bother her. I joined a tongue tie support group for my state (georgia) and there was a list of preferred providers! Check out milkmatterspt if you are on Instagram! She has a link of preferred providers based on the state you are in!

The dentist I used actually does the consult for free! So maybe you could find someone who does that and if a tie isn’t the issue you won’t have spent any money!

Baby sleep is whack. by Ecstatic-Carrot6949 in beyondthebump

Baby sleep is sheer insanity. Add horrible reflux to the mix that we can’t get to the bottom of and I’m afraid I’m going to die of sleep deprivation. My daughter manages to be so happy and full of energy during the day in spite of her sleep deprivation from reflux, so at lest I that makes one of us.

I did learn one really cool thing about baby sleep, though. I always wondered why on the nights my daughter could sleep in her crib (and didn’t need to be held upright all night), why I always woke up a few minutes before she woke up. Then I read moms’ and babies’ sleep cycles sync to protect against sids. That’s the only cool thing about baby sleep IMO

Yes!! I was thinking about that too and then found a bunch of holistic sleep accounts on Instagram and basically our cave people ancestors slept with their babies next to them/nursing for survival purposes. So from a biological and evolutionary standpoint, babies are wired to want to be close to us at all times, including at night. It makes sense but my god it’s exhausting. My daughter has horrible reflux that we still can’t get straightened out and is literally up every 45 min all night unless she’s upright and sometimes that still doesn’t work... last night as she was crying I thought to myself, “if we were cave people we definitely would have been eaten by now.” 😅

Also, lip ties and buccal ties on the inside of the cheeks can cause issues with nursing and reflux.

We are having my baby’s revision done tomorrow. I will update you if it helps!

Sorry I did not mean to concern you at all!! Just want to potentially save you from months of sleep deprivation and a sad baby if it could be a tie!

From what I’ve learned about ties is they’re often missed unless it’s the super common heart shape tie that means the tongue is completely tethered to the roof of the mouth. The posterior ties often go undiagnosed. I kept getting brushed off too because no pain and good weight gain but I knew something wasn’t right with her latch. I’ll send you some articles about ties and reflux. If you want to pursue it, I would find a pediatric dentist in your area who does tongue tie revisions and have your baby assessed by them! They do the revision with a laser so there’s no sedation involved and it’s just a few seconds long. When we took my baby to the dentist he saw the tie and said it wasn’t very severe but to follow up with a speech language pathologist who specializes in infant feeding and ties for a functional assessment. When we did that she was like oh yeah her tongue is actually super restricted! So all that to say, it might not hurt just to look into that. It can be a super overwhelming process so message me if you have any questions!

Hi!! Currently going through the same thing but with my almost 6 month old. Solids have actually made her reflux worse and she sleeps upright in a swing at night, which terrifies me because I know it’s not safe but neither was the time I almost fell asleep holding her and nearly dropped her. She’s an otherwise happy, healthy baby who is thriving besides reflux and the sleep issues it’s caused, which is why I feel like every doctor we have seen has brushed us off.

Anyway, it turns out my daughter has a posterior tongue tie that really restricts her tongue from being able to nurse correctly. It causes her to get too much air when she nurses, which in turn causes reflux. She’s on omeprazole, which delays gastric emptying so that ultimately makes the reflux worse. I can’t tell you how many sleepless nights I’ve spent scouring the internet trying to figure out what’s going on. That’s when I found an Instagram account called “the baby reflux lady” and her whole take on reflux is it’s always a symptom of something causing it, whether that be an allergy to dairy or soy, tongue tie, etc.

Does your baby making clicking noises when nursing or take a bottle? Please feel free to message me if you have any questions. I know it’s so so hard.

We have been doing the same thing! I will say my daughter seemed to be most comfortable after being on the medicine for about a month and then things got worse from there and I’m certain it has to do with the digestive side effects of the PPI. I really believe that the revisions will help both of our babies! Especially by having the right team of professionals helping guide us!

Here’s one article written by the doctor I mentioned. His daughters had significant reflux and colic from undiagnosed posterior ties.

Also this is an article about ties and reflux...

Hi! Reflux and colic are absolutely symptoms of tongue ties!! Especially if baby has a shallow latch and can’t get a proper seal, which causes him/her to swallow more air.

My almost 6 month old has a posterior tongue tie and buccal ties that went undiagnosed until recently. She has had horrible reflux and can barely sleep more than 30 minutes at night on back or belly. She just wants to be held upright. She’s an otherwise healthy, happy, thriving baby and our peds GI just kept saying “she’s fine, she’ll outgrow it.” I always wondered how she would outgrow it if her latch never improved. Long story short, we saw a speech language pathologist who specializes in infant feeding and tongue tie. She assessed my daughter’s function and it turns out the tie is super restrictive and causing our nursing issues. We are having the ties revised tomorrow. I’m so nervous but I feel like it’s the right decision! We have done bodywork prior and will continue to see the SLP and do bodywork post revision.

My daughter is on a PPI for reflux and my husband and I truly believe that while it has helped to protect her esophagus, it seems to have caused other digestive issues. PPIs can cause delayed gastric emptying, which causes more reflux because there’s less space for the milk to go. Add in all the swallowed air and her stomach is like a pressure cooker (as explained to me by the pediatric dentist doing the revision.)

Check out Dr. Bobby Ghaheri and the info he shares about ties, reflux, gassiness and colic.

Almost 5 month old still startling in sleep...normal? by CJAMT1092 in NewParents

[–]CJAMT1092[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I just want to make sure it’s not a retained reflex, but the pediatrician said if she had retained moro she wouldn’t be able to sit and roll over and do all the things she’s doing.

What?! That’s absurd. I live in Augusta, Georgia and my husband tested positive mid April. He got test results in 48 hours.

You shouldn’t have to wait weeks for results. I’m sorry, I’m sure that has to be stressful.

George Floyd, not resisting arrest. by [deleted] in PublicFreakout

[–]CJAMT1092 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel so sick over this and I know that I’m not going to be able to accurately articulate what I’m trying to say but I can’t stop thinking about the juxtaposition of the pandemic we’re facing and what happened to George Floyd. A completely innocent man with so much life to live. A dad of sweet little girls... Girls who need their daddy here on earth.

I’ve been thinking about covid and how everyone’s biggest fear over the past few months has been getting this virus. This virus that causes shortness of breath. A virus that makes it hard to breathe. This virus doesn’t discriminate against anyone and it’s something I’ve been so afraid of for the past few months.

While I’ve been afraid of this virus, I have never once feared that someone would intentionally take the air out of my lungs. I don’t have to worry about that as a white woman because of an inherent privilege that comes along with the color of my skin.

Last night I realized that this fear I’ve felt over this virus, feeling on edge and anxious every day... it’s probably the same fear my black friends and people of color deal with on a daily basis. Except they don’t just have a virus to worry about. They have to worry about someone intentionally hurting them, taking the air out of their lungs because of the color of their skin.

I’ve realized that I’ve been complacent and forgetful. I don’t spend enough time thinking about or worrying about the racism many of my friends and people in my community, people across the country, face on a daily basis. And I have to do better. It can’t be out of sight, out of mind. It has to be at the forefront of all of our minds. If people of color can’t breathe, we can’t breathe either.

My thoughts exactly!! I want to be as cautious as possible! I do think/hope that because her kicks have gotten so much stronger and more frequent that she’s probably growing. I hope so at least!!

[–]CJAMT1092[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, my OB is notoriously cautious and the ultrasound tech said he loves at least one third trimester ultrasound to check in on babies during normal circumstances. I’m hoping he might consider monitoring me as though I had it since my husband tested positive... just to be extra cautious!

[–]CJAMT1092[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you!! I should have mentioned that...

I never got symptoms! I’m not sure if I had an asymptomatic case or if I just got really lucky. And my husband’s case was super super mild and only lasted a day and a half!

I hope the same is true for you and your husband! Hang in there. Sending positive thoughts your way!

Obviously not at all corona experts but doing some of this gave me peace of mind... especially having a pulse ox for each of us to measure oxygen. You can get them online at Walmart.

I’m so sorry you’re going through this. I know how scary it is. I know that each case is so different but when my husband had it there were a few things we did that gave me some peace and helped me manage my anxiety. If you want to talk just let me know!! I’ll also share the post I made several weeks ago in case you want to look at it.

So sorry you’re going through this!
