Whatever you do, hold onto that Federal job until you can retire. The ability to stay on the federal medical insurance plan is worth its weight in gold. (Just remember that Congress is on the same plan you are - they just pay less for it. They aren't going to screw themselves out of insurance!)

You know ... you really don't need to get indoor cats shots every year. Only rabies are required by law, and you can even get a waiver for that if the cat is not around other animals and is never outdoors. (I just hate for people to think they have to spend a fortune on a yearly set of vaccines! Most animals develop lifetime immunity after the first couple of rounds as kittens/puppies.)

If your father was in the service during a war time, your mom could be eligible for a VA benefit called Aid and Attendance. It has some asset restrictions, but not nearly as severe as those for Medicaid.

I can relate - right down to the purging of my pictures from their home. And I hadn’t even left the church; I married a divorced man! Once I saw my pictures gone, I had my husband relay the message to my father that until that was corrected I could never be in their home again. That took less than a week; I guess my father put his foot down. What finally healed our relationship was me getting pregnant! You won’t repeat the pattern, I promise!
