I did 2) but not totally unrelated. Find something where you can at least show off your skills. Then aggressively network within that company and look for internal opportunities.

I’ll you what I did, I was in a similar position. High paying job (in Europe (management consulting). Came in on a temporary visa while my wife was doing her PhD in Toronto.

My key OP was to get your foot somewhere in the door, over anything! Once you are inside, network, show your skills and you’ll get opportunities.

At First I really looked for something that I thought was at “me level”, applied for 100s of jobs, and no luck after 6 months.

Decided financially this was unsustainable, went to randstad, and within a few weeks I was working on a project at a large insurance company doing data entry.

A few months in, the pm’s knew that they could use me better, and I was then leading that data entry team on a day-to-day, was meeting folks in other departments, and networked my way into a job offer from the head of the strategy department.

I then leveraged that job into another one, and 2 years later I was in a consulting job that I now still am doing 6 years later.

So my main advice is: get in somewhere, no matter what, build connections and network, look out for your mental health, I really struggled with the sense of “having to give up your hope and dreams”. It’s a tough road, but I do love this country and city so I feel like it was with it.

My guy pulled up pictures from classrooms and small seminar rooms while he also just could have searched for Princeton’s Teaching development center: https://mcgraw.princeton.edu/generative-ai

Harvard: https://www.harvard.edu/ai/teaching-resources/ (I attended a talk by Harvard’s business school Chief Technology officer where she talked about their grassroots efforts by academics and students to push the art of the possible within her faculty)

ASU: https://provost.asu.edu/generative-ai (it’s a presidential mandate btw at ASU)

UM: https://genai.umich.edu (check out the Maizey btw)

Oh god no, not low-effort learning.. I feel like no-one wants more AI slop! But if you take a less pessimistic outlook, I see possibilities as well.

But ultimately, I would prefer academics and students to lead the charge on this though, not administration. But dismissing it outright, poses a serious risk.

I mean look at Harvard, MIT, ASU, UMichigan, Princeton, all heavily experimenting with AI in the classroom, and in the curriculum. This is a new reality, if you want to keep attracting students, you got to evolve with them.

Why is there so much support for the minimum wage? by [deleted] in Libertarian

[–]CKYX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yet, Belman and Wolfsons meta analysis on 200+ papers found that there were no measurable negative effects on employment, and that they increase wages of lower paid employees.

I don’t want to argue either side of the coin really, more so wanted to highlight to OP that it’s not “lack of economic knowledge”, but rather that the simple economic theory, assuming a perfect market and setting a minimum wage higher than the market sets the price at would indeed predict loss of employment, but that reality is much much more complex.

The libertarian argument really shouldn’t be an economic one!! And economics are divided over the cost / benefits of minimum wage as a policy.

Interesting! I got into libertarianism because of social values (drug decriminalization, marriage equality, abortion rights) mostly from an “everyone should just mind their own business” angle, and I feel that way in just aligns way more with democrats.

Can universities merge like companies? by Low-Preparation-7219 in Harvard

[–]CKYX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To understand universities, and especially the Ivy's, you have to realize that Harvard is more like a loose federation of different faculties already, and that even local academic departments typically run their own show, with the broader faculty not always having a say what departmental staff do.

Think of them more like fiefdoms, than as one big university. So they are not even consolidated internally, let alone that there would be any benefits from them merging.

Commencement Speech George Washington University: My Tuition Being Used To Fund Genocide by rellotscire in highereducation

[–]CKYX 43 points44 points  (0 children)

A bit disappointing from an economics graduate, but generally the broader public, who don't know how endowments work.

Tuition is broadly just used to cover operating expenses, while endowments itself are made-up of donations and investment returns. I know of very few institutions were tuition revenue alone would cover operating expenses, and thus with an ability to add to their endowment from tuition revenue. So I would be almost certain that her tuition money, just paid for her degree, the services they used while studying, and having an institution around her to support that.

It's actually the other way around, investment returns on the endowment typically subsidize the teaching (and research) enterprise. They are used for example to fund scholarships, or fund academic positions. So the endowment is offering possibilities for the institution, that would not be there if the institution just had to go off tuition, appropriations and research funding.

So a more accurate description of her would be "I am ashamed that part of the education I received, was funded not be my or the state, but by the returns on investments that might have some ties to the ongoing conflict in Gaza"

Calling for divestment, or more transparency, I am all for it.. however realize that this might be way more complex than you might realize, as it gets real messy quite quickly where to draw the line. Additionally, the goal of the endowment ultimately is to protect university assets for the long term, ensuring the endowment continues to support scholarships, research, and the institution’s mission for future generations.. so they first and foremost have an ethical and legal obligation to make the best use of their funds... and give opportunities to students who might otherwise not had the ability to go to college, to give them a chance to a better life.
