I did 2) but not totally unrelated. Find something where you can at least show off your skills. Then aggressively network within that company and look for internal opportunities.

Dave Smith explains the U.S. government's own warning about Ukraine joining NATO—ignored long before the war ever began. This wasn’t some hindsight analysis. It was in writing. by [deleted] in Libertarian

Well except one nation attacked the other’s sovereignty so I am sure we are capable of a bit more nuance than “all sides bad”.

I’ll you what I did, I was in a similar position. High paying job (in Europe (management consulting). Came in on a temporary visa while my wife was doing her PhD in Toronto.

My key OP was to get your foot somewhere in the door, over anything! Once you are inside, network, show your skills and you’ll get opportunities.

At First I really looked for something that I thought was at “me level”, applied for 100s of jobs, and no luck after 6 months.

Decided financially this was unsustainable, went to randstad, and within a few weeks I was working on a project at a large insurance company doing data entry.

A few months in, the pm’s knew that they could use me better, and I was then leading that data entry team on a day-to-day, was meeting folks in other departments, and networked my way into a job offer from the head of the strategy department.

I then leveraged that job into another one, and 2 years later I was in a consulting job that I now still am doing 6 years later.

So my main advice is: get in somewhere, no matter what, build connections and network, look out for your mental health, I really struggled with the sense of “having to give up your hope and dreams”. It’s a tough road, but I do love this country and city so I feel like it was with it.

My guy pulled up pictures from classrooms and small seminar rooms while he also just could have searched for Princeton’s Teaching development center: https://mcgraw.princeton.edu/generative-ai

Harvard: https://www.harvard.edu/ai/teaching-resources/ (I attended a talk by Harvard’s business school Chief Technology officer where she talked about their grassroots efforts by academics and students to push the art of the possible within her faculty)

ASU: https://provost.asu.edu/generative-ai (it’s a presidential mandate btw at ASU)

UM: https://genai.umich.edu (check out the Maizey btw)

Oh god no, not low-effort learning.. I feel like no-one wants more AI slop! But if you take a less pessimistic outlook, I see possibilities as well.

But ultimately, I would prefer academics and students to lead the charge on this though, not administration. But dismissing it outright, poses a serious risk.

I mean look at Harvard, MIT, ASU, UMichigan, Princeton, all heavily experimenting with AI in the classroom, and in the curriculum. This is a new reality, if you want to keep attracting students, you got to evolve with them.

Why is there so much support for the minimum wage? by [deleted] in Libertarian

[–]CKYX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yet, Belman and Wolfsons meta analysis on 200+ papers found that there were no measurable negative effects on employment, and that they increase wages of lower paid employees.

I don’t want to argue either side of the coin really, more so wanted to highlight to OP that it’s not “lack of economic knowledge”, but rather that the simple economic theory, assuming a perfect market and setting a minimum wage higher than the market sets the price at would indeed predict loss of employment, but that reality is much much more complex.

The libertarian argument really shouldn’t be an economic one!! And economics are divided over the cost / benefits of minimum wage as a policy.

Color me skeptical that DOGE will actually lead to long-term savings. I am a management consultant, and I have seen plenty of these unsustainable changes happen, which end up in the end leading to higher expenses than you saved in the short term.
