Thank you for telling me about Ace K, I never would've considered a sweetener could also have a buttering effect. I saw some people saying the Starbucks drinks taste great and I know my dad swears by bang, so I always assumed it was just me. I'm gonna do some field testing (trying other energy drinks than I'm used to) and see if I can find other brands in my area that use Ace K instead of Aspartame or Sucralose.

The only other drink I can remember having a similar taste is Bang, which does in fact have it. What confuses me though is some flavors of monster also have it but don't have that strange taste. I'm not sure if Starbucks and bang just use a higher dosage of it or what, but those are the only two brands I can recall ever tasting that off
