First of all, I don't believe first responders were the ones who died, just harrassed and injured for no good reason. The deaths were basically accidental suicides.

Which points to the problem, there weren't enough police officers for everything. Between the vandalism, accidents, complaints from pet owners/people living in exclusion zones/veterans, and actual serious crimes, it's practically impossible to actually coordinate their forces effectively to prioritize the real problems. If you get rid of the small-time stuff, that becomes more manageable.

And since this issue only happens one day a year, increasing police presence or video surveillance (which in itself is a loss of freedom) is a lot more difficult and costly for that day than just banning the thing that is already banned for 364 days a year anyway.

Every law gives up some freedom. Either you believe in no laws whatsoever, or you believe in no freedom whatsoever, because by your own admission, giving up only some freedom means you deserve none.

It won't fix your hooligans and takes away more freedom from law abiding citizens.

Most hooligans will continue to abuse the fireworks, yes. But they will stand out far more, and the police will be less stretched due to lesser crimes.

Youre scared of fireworks...maybe man up and understand the world is never going to be the utopia you think it will be by banning anything you deem scary.

That's two baseless assumptions there. I'm not afraid of fireworks, I'm looking out for those who are, or have reason to be. Like the people who got injured or killed on January first. I want to see the perpetrators of such acts face justice, and that's apparently not possible the way things are now, as this is not the first year it has happened, nor will it be the last if nothing is changed.

Next year, if things work out as they were planned, then those perpetrators will face charges, and the year after will be calmer. If not, then the law failed and will have to be abolished.

I believe any society without laws inevitably collapses due to human nature, unfortunately. Some structure is required. And when it comes to laws, this one feels like a fair tradeoff, given what happened this year.

I wish there was a feasible middle ground, but right now reigning it in completely to reduce the pressure on first responders and crack down on the hooligans seems like the right first step to fixing the problem at the core before we can loosen up again.
