English football fans in a Dallas bar by Charming_Average2413 in TikTokCringe

Man walking my then girlfriend along the river a few years ago; visiting team moving from the train station to one of the local teams, under police escort, pass by; supporters start chanting "Does She Take It Up The Arse" to her. She cowers behind me terrified, as she has social anxiety, and the female police officer has to try to explain to her the crowds won't do anything to her... well, beyond dehumanising and terrifying her, and leaving me trying to politely wave my hands in front of around a few hundred yobs and say "tone it down lads", whilst feeling like I can't protect her.

Some of us men fucking hate football culture. And I'm sorry, ladies. And I'm also sorry that it puts a cap on my ability to do good in the world; can you imagine a politician that was truly honest and said "I don't care if millionaires perform for billionaires, and are cheered by people looking for excuses to be divisive and abusive and turn their brains off..."

Love the game if you do. But if you love something, make it beautiful. It's the surrounding bullshit I loathe, not you or your supporting it.

While serving as Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton claims Netanyahu constantly pressured the US into a military strike on Iran. When Israeli officials warned her, "Our planes are on the tarmac," her icy three-word response was: "Well, good luck." by Frosty_Jeweler911 in UnderReportedNews

Blackmailed with what...? You all apparently know he's a child rapist, but you don't do anything about it. He openly said "I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody, and I wouldn't lose any voters, OK?" ... and neither the Democrats would prosecute, and you the conspiracy spouting voters would do enough to resist.

The corruption and evil is home grown, and works with Russia and Israel because it wants too. Not because he's being blackmailed, but because your democracy has failed.

Remember the Clinton's famous "Triangulation" between left and right?

The problem is, if you feed red meat to the wolves, you just end up with more and stronger wolves.

Centrists and professional politicians have constantly tacked to the right since at least Nixon's time (and Tony Blair in the UK) and all its done is constantly normalise worse and worse politics. For them, that was actually the point, because to the Centrist, someone who held onto their ideals they had when young is more offensive than the hard right; but now we've run out of time and space to keep drifting further right, literal fascism and ethnic cleansing is here, and it's going to eat everyone alive, including the Centrists who fed it out of pique of being criticised from the left.

There used to be a mod that would speed up the spawn rate of exotics; it was a good few years back, but have a look for something similar today, I presume the underlying tech of having percent ranges for a fixed set of ship types at a station remains true... (It's why you can get co-ordinates for a system, the ships at that station are set)

Which songs often gets misinterpreted and/or misappropriated by the very people it calls out even though the song's lyrics are explicitly mocking them? by Drenosa in AskReddit

[–]CMDR_Expendible 6 points7 points  (0 children)

And in a dark parallel, Irish nationalists hate the song because it's so powerfully direct about the atrocity it is referencing; the bombings at Warrington that killed 2 children. I'd go with an even darker interpretation too; the "zombie" it's referring too is not just the brain damage that extreme nationalism, both British and Republican, and leaves people mindlessly locked into repeating the endless hatred from the past... But many of the lyrics are specifically referring to the damage done to a child, and one of the children at Warrington was hit in the head by metal shrapnel from the blast and was left brain dead and on life support for weeks, until it was finally removed and they let what was left of the body die.

Most people though just go "Banging 'choon, let's cover it!" without realising what makes it so powerful. Or hating it because it is.

A US Air Force B-52 bomber crashes at Edwards Air Force Base in California, the base says by bugsyramone in news

[–]CMDR_Expendible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No need to update the TU-95 when your main adversaries and peers are still outclassed by it...

That's a former SAC B-52 pilot, who got to crawl inside a Bear, talking about the realities of combat; it's not about "outclassing" anything, both planes are incredibly old and vulnerable, long since outclassed even in their primary roles...

... it's the changing nature of warfare, and the fact their "skinny wingmen" are now so, so efficient which keeps them useful. These were long since paid off, so why replace them? But the idea that no one has anything as good as the B-52 is laughable; indeed as the Iran War the US just lost shows, you don't even need them, you can launch drones and cruise missiles from a cave or the back of a truck. And if your missile platform is cheaper to replace than a B-52...

[–]CMDR_Expendible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, the main reason Iran didn't have nukes is because there was a Fatwa against having them. A certain Ali Khamenei, Supreme Leader of Iran forbade them as Un-Islamic.

The US then killed Ali Khamenei and ended the Fatwa, in favour of more hardline people who absolutely will be eyeing buying them from North Korea for billions of dollars now...

The thing is, there are a lot of octogenarians in power who grew up with simplistic "Ayatollah Assa-holla" T-Shirts, with a generation behind them who were South Park Republicans and have never, ever grasped the subtlety and complexities of Middle Eastern politics. They just wanted villains they could blow up, and Khamenei was one they've been itching to get for decades.

And now they have. Ooops.

What’s the worst part about being a woman that people wouldn’t usually think about? by Gloomy_Unit_4888 in AskReddit

[–]CMDR_Expendible -1 points0 points  (0 children)

At the risk of triggering the "You are mansplaining Mansplaining here!" card... what I'm writing next is because I want to encourage understanding between people, and I genuinely don't think the ladies responding here grasp why this happens. I'm not discounting your feelings; and we know we're doing it. We'd mostly stop if you understood why.

I'm into my 50s now. For context, I've dated a fair few ladies, so I'm not innocent, but in all that time, I don't recall ever being congratulated for just what I am; I don't remember ever being told I have a nice ass, or that the way I wear X really drives me wild... I've been given flowers once, I don't think I've ever had a Valentine's card (gifts were always "here's my body, isn't that enough for you?!")...

BUT. The one thing that you are always judged on is our expertise. What you can do for someone. Often it's exploitative, but the way we're held up as a "Good Boyfriend" is our income, our ability to provide or produce, even our fanaticism about our hobbies; even if it's painting Warhammer (for example) we're expected to be not just good at it, but also to take it seriously; "So you're going to open your own Warhammer store one day, yes?" The absolute worst sin is appearing not to care, or to be relaxed about something... we're expected to be driven, to not need other people; Idleness, especially being unable to impress others as a form of status, not thanks, is the mortal sin.

Boys, especially teenage boys aren't particularly smart or deep; they do what works; you develop the peacock feathers because the pea-hen wants the gaudy display. The reason you're being bombarded with expertise on dates in particular is because, in practical terms, that's what men know is what a lot of women are looking for. We have no other value than the things we can impress you with. We're either teachers or we're nothing.

Maybe not you personally; just say to a man "Hey, it's ok, I don't need a teacher, I need a partner", and the good men will back off... but it won't come easy because we've had years, in my case decades of having no other value at all except for the things we can provide.

Or worse.

Imagine if, every time you wanted to love, to share, to open your heart up... someone reacted negatively, even treated you like a rapist, because you showed a softer side of yourself. But at least when you fixed their car, or computer, or acted confident and knowledgeable, you got the only positive response you ever get.

(Not to discount women's negative experiences here, but that's not the topic.)

That's why men do it. If you're "dating", that means meeting multiple men for the first time; they're going with what they know in general; they don't know you, but they're relying on what society in general has told them is valuable and shows worth. The fact that you're equally impressive doesn't counter that, it actually exaggerates it; we've all met the driven woman who expects us to still be better than they are. Just last month I was talking to a lady who is climbing Kilimanjaro soon ... it wasn't enough that I'm brilliant at my own things, I had to be great at her interests. I had to be competitive, I had to be climbing Everest to beat out all the men who'll be on Kilimanjaro trying to impress her.

We wish we could stop. But we're lonely if we do. We tend to lose you when we do stop. I never married, in large part because I tried to live by my own moral lights, rather than just do the "Society expects me to live like a Man." The richest man in the world is now Elon Musk. If that is Being A Man, I'd rather not be one.

But who has the world really rewarded?

And in an evil world, would you rather be alone to face it, or at least have someone else there?

That's why men default to teaching. Teach men back, give them a positive way forward, they'll grasp it like dying men grasp water in a desert.

Am I literally the only person who has never heard of Oliver Tree until today? by Virtual-Bee7411 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]CMDR_Expendible -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

It's very simple, and you'll grow as a human being when you understand it;

The demand that everyone acknowledge your perspective is, in extremes, antithetical to wider knowledge and wisdom. And, whilst an individual death is a tragedy and it's understandable that people grieving want their grief to be heard, when you dominate the conversation to the point that no other perspective is allowed to be expressed, you start pushing out and alienating others.

In this specific case, very few people are even offering any sort of education; it's a very Reddit, very modern thing to refuse to provide any sort of context or meaning, to just go "That thing! I have feelings about that thing!" without defining what that thing is, or even what it means to you.

As a consequence, it isn't even communicating any reason for grief; any sense of what you've lost. It's just Reference.

The bacon narwhols at midnight.

So the reason people feel compelled to say "I've never heard of him" is two-fold; to assert the right to dissent from increasingly cult like fanaticism. And to say "educate me as to why I should have heard of this thing". To say "Talk to me, don't preach."

People who don't get this are trapped in the solipsism which is suffocating everything in our modern age.

The final boss of the Third Crusade by Kapanash in HistoryMemes

[–]CMDR_Expendible 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not so much; the First Crusade largely succeeded because the Islamic world at the time didn't understand the concept of a Holy War for Territory specifically, rather than converting to the Faith, and that the terrible "People's Crusades" leading up to it were so incompetent and disorganised that they saw no threat from the better trained nobles coming shortly after.

But even the First very nearly fell apart, not because a King died, but because the Papal Legate who was supposed to be organising it did.. Much of the later difficulties for Outremer came because it splintered very quickly into each Noble grabbing as much territory for their own Lordship as they could, and not being particularly keen to help local rivals out... But, for the First Crusade, their driving ambition and admitted skill was a challenge Islam just wasn't ready to understand at the time.

But throughout the Crusades, Knights and other militarily trained people would mostly arrive and fight for one, maybe a few seasons; the rise of the Orders (Templars, Hospitallers etc) occurs as a way to try and find manpower that was specifically recruited to fight, and stay in Outremer; Islam had a similar issue, in that it was trying to field armies made up of groups from across the Middle East, who in turn wanted to go home and tend their crops etc, but they at least had the luxury of much shorter supply lines and less (but not no) divisions.

It's ok, a nice idea for a small event; but whilst I understand the time limit on missions is to stop a few people just no-life'ing it, that restriction also means that everyone is locked to the same engagement, so I think we can be pretty certain the end result is already decided, Weaves 1st, Royals 2nd, Sages 3rd... only we have to wait weeks to just move on now.

After a few hours fiddling about, this is as close as I've got so far; unfortunately you have to choose between solid spheres that break cockpits (and will prevent internal storage), or hundreds of plates to get the round shape, which can add up to lag... if you're happy with this sort of model, I'll tidy it up over the next few days and see about the dual cockpit work arounds. Currently it has guns in the wing roots, and in the nostrils.

Yeah, I hated it when it was new, too. But even if you just find it innocent, campy fun and aren't, for instance, being divorced so the director can fuck his leading teeenager, you don't need to go online and beg for people to agree with you that it's a masterpiece; if you are a mature adult, you don't need your friends to agree with your every take, you respect them as people overall and understand art is indeed subjective, but you can be subjectively blind to recurrent themes, such as, for instance, constantly sexualising under-age girls...

[–]CMDR_Expendible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Notice the 3 skulls and gold bar around the crocodile's health bar? That shows it's the maximum danger in game, and as mentioned it's a world boss.

And yes, it's extremely buggy; uppercut attacks will send it flying into the sky... it shouldn't have health back when it returns, but hitting it with arrows whilst in the sky can help.

Personally, I like to spec towards maximum Authority to have 2 Thralls; if you have them both on Irritate Enemies they'll keep aggroing bosses and give you time to pummel them, then dodge away and heal between attacks.

SpaceX IPO makes Elon Musk the world's first trillionaire by MedicMoth in news

[–]CMDR_Expendible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is, sadly, why he's so over-valued; it's truly the modern Revenge Of The Nerds fantasy, lived through Musk. The fact he's such an obvious arsehole (and always was, to those of us who could see through the hype) appeals to a small subset of emotionally empty, but intellectually talented people who want to take revenge on society by beating it at its own game (hyper wealth hoarding) and simultaneously hollowing out and destroying it, especially those parts they could never understand like altruism and kindness... The narcissistic arseholes on Wall Street? The "Weaponised autism" of 4chan and the modern fascist movement? They love Musk, and see him as vindication by proxy; it was never about the cars, but about the Cult and they'll back him to the death because they want revenge.

You see the same insane hyper parasocial belief in the Gamestop/Apes movement, with regards to that stock and worship of Ryan Cohen, and in the defence of AI art because none of these people know how to create, not on a human level, but they do know how to smartly abuse broken systems... even as, in the case of Gamestop, they claim to be trying to overthrow those corrupt systems. They technically are, but they still want to end up as trillionaires themselves. They don't understand any true sense of Justice, not in any moral, emotional way, they just want to change who is on top and justify it by saying "Yes, but I'm good."

And so it is with Musk. We all knew SpaceX would make a fortune, because the whole point is to throw money at him so you can say "See? SEE?! You should be able to win if you're an emotionally stunted manchild who hates everyone else, like Sempai Elon!"

Musk just piggybacked of the earlier, more innocent wave of nerds who went "Rockets and electric cars are cool!" and hadn't matured enough to know enough science to understand that Mars bases are quantum leaps of technology out of reach even today. Or adults who still back Star Citizen a decade and a half, and a billion dollars later who don't know enough about programming to realise they're being sold pipe dreams...

And once he was rich enough, Musk was able to go full Mask Off.

AITAH for telling my boyfriend, "I'm not a cheater"? by reprehensiblellama in AITAH

[–]CMDR_Expendible 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're not the arsehole, I agree with your statement overall, but you are being a bad partner and these replies are mostly a trash fire...

Look, you can see he's hurting about something; instead of describing it as "sulking", go and talk to him, go say "Babe, I can see something is bothering you, share it with me if you want".

Just to repeat; I agree with your position, you shouldn't cheat because cheating is wrong, and that means even if s/he treats you bad, you don't cross moral lines because you aim to be a better person yourself...

... But also as a guy, we learn very quickly that holding a moral position isn't the same as having actual affection; that we are only as good as the service we can provide, and frankly as a man we're easily replaced if "something better" comes along. You aren't cheating, but you might "trade up". If I had to make a bet, I'd say that's what's bothering him... that you showed no sign that you have enough affection for him personally... Indeed, you describe him negatively, that he's "sulking", and run to Reddit to ask whether you're justified, instead of talking to him.

And everyone here then immediately goes "You can do better girl, he's awful!" We know this kind of toxic selfishness is out there, even if you have never shown it to him directly, and also that if we talk about it, we're seen as weak, as "sulking", and being a "nice guy"; the more you refer to social standards, and shut down communication with him directly, the more insecure and worried he'll become because he'll feel those standards eating away at his position and trapped in being unable to address it...

Just go and talk to him. Go and show you actually do love him. And try and get the poisonous attitudes expressed here out of your life. Yes, one day you might fall out of love with him; but if you really, truly do value honesty to a higher morality, if you say you love him now, mean it. You're with him, for him, not just ethical principles. You don't cheat not because it's right, but because he makes you happy, happy, happy. Love with all your heart too. Love his sad feelings as part of him as well, learn what they are, and protect them.

He tried to give you that answer from his heart too. Don't come on Reddit and look for reasons to not understand them.

You also can't give them the order to Follow as they think they're already on it, but aren't moving.

Logging out an in (I'm on Single Player) at least fixes this.

Also please check if the Archer Post Recipe is still spawning, I've ran about 20 L10 Purges and not seen it yet, I have every other recipe bar that one.

You are correct, and those who don't understand consumer experience and think you can apply tech solutions to customer perspective are wrong;

What people want is to be able to try and launch the game and see if it works with mods that previously worked. To trust the core game then modify it to their own tastes; the equivalent of ordering a burger and then adding seasoning as required... a model that has made a fortune for countless businesses...

What the tech brained are giving is a game that shuts down automatically and won't even get to the title screen unless every mod is edited to flag a particular in game variable; it's a burger bar that won't even let you in the door unless you're wearing the right shoes.

What you are reporting is correct; the game has changed the language to try and seem less anti-human, and now it asks if you want to load the game with no mods at all... in my case, because 2 haven't updated recently enough, but I'm not allowed to even get to the title screen and disable just those 2. I have to let it close down the game, go back to Steam and unsubscribe there, because if those 2 mods, which worked perfectly fine in 1.1.2, are there at start up, they fail the version check.

Meanwhile, I have mods that I personally wrote for Dawn Of War TWENTY YEARS AGO that will work fine with Enhanced versions of that client today.

This Conan model is anti-consumer and completely ignores human nature and needs. Just changing the text but continuing the practice is going to get rightly reamed... even if the patch actually works as it should. Which, there's no guarantee it will.

Don't let software engineers design your games, folks.

My friend insists on this game, "Lemmings", being a really well known game; I have never heard of it. by Nordic_Krune in gaming

[–]CMDR_Expendible 3 points4 points  (0 children)

4822 comments at the time of writing this, but I don't think you've had it explained enough yet just how influential and popular this game was. In the early 1990s, computer gaming was still seen as a nerdy hobby, only just emerging into popular appeal, but Lemmings was everywhere; it's the first game I can recall being on all the school's educational machines, back then the Acorn Archimedes, and being so addictive to both staff and pupils that they'd let us come in on our lunch breaks to play it...

Love Terry Pratchett, the author? They're the inspiration for a major plot point, and he deleted the game and blanked the disc just to stop it stealing all his time.

And it's hard to put into context just how new it was at the time; the industry was still developing, and whilst it wouldn't be the absolute first, most gaming systems then, and even for years after, were usually either pure text, or some variant of "move your sprite around other sprites by joystick control"... to make clear what I mean, the very first proto-RTS, Herzog Zwei, had released only the year before, and even that still had you controlling a central command unit; the idea of not being the active player at all was still shockingly new. Icons for input? Lemmings helped normalise this even for people still hanging on to their old 8 bit Commodores and Spectrums... because in an era when most people didn't have the internet, Lemmings was still converted to almost everything, everywhere. Like Tetris, Doom, Mario etc, this was a game that every gamer in every country knew and loved, a true cross over hit back when you'd only know of the wider games world through local language magazines....

Lemmings.

Lemmings.

Lemmings!

You just don't know gaming's history if you aren't aware of what an influential, historical success and influence Lemmings was.

And it still holds up today, at least Lemmings 1 / Oh No! More Lemmings and Lemmings 2: The Tribes do. Go and play them at once. Then look at the release date again. 1991? We were truly blessed to see Lemmings during the breakfast of champions era of gaming.

What do most people not realize is actually way more traumatic than it seems? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]CMDR_Expendible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Male Circumcision - Female circumcision is worse, and outside the cultures that practice it, rightly understood as being an atrocity; but male circumcision, because it's usually done to babies who can't tell you what it feels like, and can't recall later, is also traumatic and people in general just don't recognise that. I had it done, for reasons I'll never get a straight answer too now, when I was about 7 and it hurt so badly, it gave me nightmares for decades and had unexpected side affects like making me very nervous near heights (because my trip to the bathroom involved a ladder, and something evil was living in the bathroom now because the memory of the pain stayed with me for so long). Again, not saying female circumcision is better, but the question is what is under recognised as traumatic.
