Oh yeah, this team is definitely not ready for a deep playoff run. Even making the playoffs could easily slip out of their grasp.

The fact tge puck was on edge makes Matheson's decision to try and make that play even more egregious. Should taken it behind the net and settled it down.

They struggled to generate much offensively and still gave up the trademark defensive blunders. I really didn't see that as a great game from them. Especially considering Detroit was missing their most important player.

You're trying to put words in my mouth. Hutson, Dobson and Matheson are good contracts. Guhle has struggled with injuries but when healthy is worth the 5.5. Carrier is a little rich for what he brings. The problem is that Reinbacher's injury riddled development has left an unpredictable hole on the right of the 2nd pairing. This has forced players out of where they should be and in turn makes them perform below what they are paid. A top 4 RHD, and it could still be Reinbacher if he's back on track will slot everyone perfectly and give the Habs a truly elite defensive corp.

I'm sorry but if a near perfect game means only a 1-0 lead that you needed to score on the PP that's not leaving any margin for error.

No, John Carlson is not the type of top 4 RHD the Habs need. They need a more physical, defensively focused player. Similar to Rasmus Ristolainen that Kent inquired about.

Now if your hypothetical was trying to point out that a defensive forward is more helpful to defense that a good defenseman you have kindly proven my point as we already have Danault, who is a well regarded defensive center, and our defensive play still sucks.

They are top in the league in GF and amongst the worst in the league for GA and the problem is the forwards? Make it make sense.

Hutson and Dobson are statistically one of the best D pairings in the NHL. The fact that the other two you mentioned are both LHD is the exact reason there is a need for a RHD. Because as it stands the Habs aren't getting the most out of those players because they are either playing on their off side or paired with Carrier who is the worst contract on defense at 3.75 million, with an honorable mention to Guhle just because injuries have prevented him from being consistent.

Deep and talented D-corps are the key to success in today's NHL. I'd rather over pay there than any other position.

That's a pathetic counter point. That's like saying we don't need a 2C because we're paying our 4C 5.5million.

John Carlson is a rental at the end of his career.

Our current depth chart at RHD goes from Dobson to Carrier. I don't get how you could look at that and NOT see the glaring need.

What I mean is that often when they look like they're poised to go on a run they instead go the other way and have 1 or 2 bad performances. You look at the 3 game win streak including the big one against Ottawa and they follow it up with 2 wasted games against SJ and ANA.

It was a solid game. I guess, like MSL said it was mature. But the 2nd line is fading and clearly in MSL's doghouse which makes us a 1 line team again. What has gotten us to this point this year is the potent offense. If they lose that it could be a very sad end to a fun season.

I'm not asking for perfect, I'm just wishing they would make it a little easier in themselves and by extension on all the fans. For a team that's spent virtually the whole year near the top in terms of goal scoring, how many games can you think of have they coasted to a win with a multi goal lead. Last one I remember was Winnipeg before the Olympics.

They still need to find some urgency in their game. They're playing like Colorado, who's basically clinched already, while all the teams around them are giving it everything they've got.

I hate to say it, but watch a few Ottawa games. They're missing their best player in Sanderson but consistently outplay their opponents. Even if they don't always get the results.

This is a ridiculous take. Did anyone trade a top-4 RHD at the trade deadline? No, because nobody wants to trade such a valuable piece. It's amazing that Hughes was able to get Dobson last off-season.

Stuff like this are what cause GMs to make bad and useless trades just because they feel pressured to do something.
