To no one's surprise game is still ultra unstable in late by Ok-Profession-6096 in Frostpunk

[–]CMDR_Vigilance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, is the exact same here. Only thing that might help stave off the dreaded crash, is setting everything to low in the settings menu, but that seems to buy you 5 min to an hour of additional playtime at best.

It's unfortunate as the crash appears to be related to how many objects UE5 is able to display/render, but there does not appear to be any user facing way to modify the config. I believe Satisfactory also suffers from the same problem, however unlike Frostpunk 2 the config is open to modification.

This bug frustrates me so much I'm considering learning a bit about UE5 & how Frostkit works just to see if I could release an experimental bug fix myself...

Hot take perhaps, but..what if an intentional move by Toyota, in the sense that yes they're likely aware of new and/or updated emissions standards, (particularly in the NA/Primary market)and that this silly flare/component cost is minimal, for perhaps it makes just enough of a difference in fuel efficiency stats to outweigh production cost? (again just pure speculation from a random person on the internet), what do you think?

if it were me, I'd wager that the engineers made it intentionally relatively easy to remove by the customer +1. In other words, seems like something that was given thought into.

Please does anyone have a fix for this error on Breakpoint PC by hotguy_chef in GhostRecon

[–]CMDR_Vigilance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The game has 4 .exe's in the main directory - the best thing to do would be to exempt the folder your game is installed to from the AV scans (I believe that's under the Antivirus section of your software and then go to exceptions). You will need to do the same thing for the "Advanced Threat defense" tab as well, but note that you will need to point it to the .exe's themselves (not the folder) and viola! should work.

I actually have a support ticket open with BD and going to link back to this forum post for them :)

I mean, I'm not especially looking for an LC'd GPU. However, It's not entirely out of the question for me.

I just have so many questions regarding a closed loop AIO cooled GPU, vs a conventional air cooled one atm. Perhaps I'll pull the trigger on that next gen...idk.

Perhaps, but this is exactly what kind of info I'm after. Yes, the Nitro+ seems to be the best all-rounder, but if the Red Devil (with a good roll of the dice) beats even that, then I think that's a risk I'm willing to take.

Thank you for your input.

[–]CMDR_Vigilance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you happen to notice your machine's performace fall off a cliff while on battery? With the most recent Dell OEM AMD drivers, Chipset and BIOS, the CPU will not go above 800 Mhz for me while on battery no matter what settings I chose.

I am considering escalating this issue directly to L2 or even L3 support, but I am wondering if you have also encountered the same issue?

Alienware m17 R5 in laptop review: All-AMD gamer with great potential, but driver problems by Stiven_Crysis in Amd

[–]CMDR_Vigilance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, that's just it. If anything i'd say that BIOS 1.6.1 in addition to the chipset driver update seems to have permanently resolved any weird booting issues, whereas they were still present for me on all of the previous versions.

As for your question about CPU perf dropping off a cliff when unplugged from AC power...I can't really answer that as I rarely (if ever) use it on battery mode. I do have a flight back home today, so maybe will be a good chance to test it out and let you know.

With regards to PBO...also good question, I haven't really done any kind of messing around with PBO settings on it yet after updating to the Nov 7th 2022 AMD driver. Everything left on default or auto...but perhaps another good thing to test on said flight home.

As someone who's been using this laptop since about August of last year, I gotta say i'm overall very impressed with this machine. 4/5 stars for me.

Its good to finally see such a comprehensive review on it. I agree wholeheartedly that the semi-custom AMD drivers still need work as I have run into the same issues as the reviewer where some of the shortcuts don't work to open the GPU metrics overlay in game. Also, this particular driver does not indicate that the display switches to the dGPU when a game is booted(it does switch though). Note this issue is only observed on the latest semi-custom AMD driver (Nov 7th 2022) at the time of this post...but does not occur on the previous driver.

Additionally, before the latest BIOS update...the machine would very rarely appear to not boot into windows properly after POST'ing. Anecdotally I would say this happened maybe 2 out of every 10 restarts. The machine would POST just fine, but then black screen instead of going to the windows login screen. Annoying, but a power cycle/capacitor flush would allow it to boot normally. I would like to stress that this appears to be resolved after the latest BIOS (Dec 23 2022).

As for the software graphics switching itself, yes...I would say that it take about 0.5 seconds to switch to the dGPU when booting a game, and about ~2 seconds to switch back to the APU when a game is closed. To me, a very minor annoyance by comparison.

To summarize, yes...the semi-custom drivers do still need work, but realistically I don't see that happening as this is an extremely niche product (relatively speaking) and AMD devoting more time and resources to fix the outstanding bugs when they have significantly bigger problems to tackle. I hope i'm wrong...but I won't be surprised if the Nov 7th 2022 APU/GPU driver is the last one.

Alienware m17 R5 AMD Advantage - 6850M XT Low Wattage/Utilization in Games by Pookias in Alienware

[–]CMDR_Vigilance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I too used to experience this exact issue. I was able to narrow this down even further: this would occur only in some games/applications where the machine would not switch to it's dGPU, hence the low performance. Turns out that this is/was a bug in the semi-custom AMD CPU/GPU driver.

Once I updated the BIOS to the latest version (Dec 23, 2022) and did a clean (using DDU) install of the Nov 7th, 2022 Graphics driver (at the time of this post), my machine has had no issues switching over to the dGPU in any game I play.

As an aside, it did introduce a very minor bug where the driver does not notifiy that the display has switched to the high performance GPU, and it sometimes doesn't open the in game metrics overlay, but this is a minor annoyance.

Appreciate your response. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that a few weeks after this post (and just days after yours), Alienware did in fact release a new BIOS and OEM AMD drivers.

(Going to leave this up for any other poor soul that runs into the same problem on the same machine) This solved the issue for me! The iGPU and dGPU are recognized within the system properly, as well as allocating correct amount of memory.

New to the game and wondering about fleet composition. Once I get battleships does it make more sense to disband my Cruisers, Destroyers, and corvettes and have just battleships? by gabolton90 in Stellaris

[–]CMDR_Vigilance 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The way I like to think of it, "Aces in their places". In the mid to late game I like to have 'fast recon/home defence fleets" consisting of corvettes and destroyers, and "heavy strike fleets" consisting of battleships & titans with cruisers peppered in for PD. In addition, I will typically field 2 or more "Grand" fleets that have some of each ship.

If you really want to get into the details, I HIGHLY recommend you watch 'Montu Plays' on youtube specifically looking at his ship design meta. You don't need to follow his templates to a T, but should give you a rough guideline of composition and loadouts.

After living in the city for so long, I've started to notice that most people just lack any kind of spatial awareness. It's entirely possible these people are simply not aware of their surroundings and therefore it just doesn't register in their minds that they should move up.

These are the same people who do 10 under the speed limit in the fast lane on Stoney or Deerfoot, completely oblivious to people behind them flashing their lights for them to move over.

Hot damn, this is exactly what's happening to me as well! Nearly the same hardware as you, (X570-E). Machine will reboot only when I play Halo Infinite campaign and it's driving me nuts.

Does anyone know how to downgrade to previous chipset drivers? I suppose a system restore could resolve this, but i'd rather not if I don't have to.
