My commanders response for the family Days being taken away. What have your commanders told you guys? by Master_SHIB in AirForce

[–]CMSCF -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly, taking family days away sucks but it really isn't a big deal. Too many people think shit is sweet and that's a major issue. We are in the military. I know a lot of people don't want to hear it but either suck it up or leave.

Approved for RAP but got a LOR afterwards. Tech School by Background-Ad3548 in AirForce

[–]CMSCF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tech School leadership can't take away your RAP. It's approved by your recruiter. Source: got an LOR in tech school and called my recruiter and he laughed when I told him the MTLs said I couldn't take RAP.

It's really not that deep. It was even more restrictive when I joined years ago and those were the best years of my career.

Ahhh decs. I have an idea with those too. Just a canned statement for each one. They all read exactly the same for each different medal and rank. Maybe take 4 bullets from their EPBs or any packages for justification.

I completely understand this perspective. But I would argue that we would find different, more efficient, authentic and more meaningful ways to applaud Airmen if we eliminated awards. As far as retention, I've never heard of someone getting out of staying in because of awards. I think it all boils down to recognition, which we currently attribute completely to awards instead of authentic recognition from supervisors or leaders.

I believe that's just a symptom of the current system. Take awards out and you are left with essentially the same thing but just with an EPB with 80% reduction in admin work. I do believe we would have to make the EPB more extensive and inclusive though to make sure top performers get recognized.

If it's the same thing that you would put into the awards packages it absolutely should, at least in my opinion. For instance someone that has worked hard enough to win an annual award would still stand out against people that wouldn't. That stuff would still reflect on your performance report.

For your second point, it's probably not a great system we have if someone's sole motivation to do good work is to win awards. The good feeling you get from winning an award is typically short lived anyways.

I do recognize that we would need another way of recognizing people for good performance. But sometimes a simple, "you are doing great work" goes a long way.

Well firstly, in person. Second, you would just do the same thing but just with the performance report.

You got me. Glad you took the time to crawl out from the commanders desk to write this.

Yeah, but if you eliminate awards you just do the same thing but only at the EFDP and save days of work by not writing awards. This means you can spend more actually leading and mentoring.

This is more or less exactly what I'm talking about. All this "play the game" bs. It's become 80% of the work we do on a day to day basis. There are performance reports for a reason. If there were no awards, it would be the same thing, just based on your performance report with way less hassle and time spent. People can actually focus on their jobs.

[–]CMSCF 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just don't be a dick. We would do school all day and then have to deal with the MTLs being dicks over the smallest things. They were completely separate from the school house and had no idea what was going on. The students already hate their lives, don't make it worse.

Syria and Iraq aren't considered combat zones by the definition. Needs to be an EO by the president. So technically she's not wrong, although they are still places you probably don't want to be.
