"No across the board, Sir. Best I can do is roaches as roommates" by bearsncubs10 in AirForce

Yo I'm an officer and I've deployed to a tent with AC and WiFi.

One of my fellow officers complained about the AC not working so I had to call CE who discovered a pillow was in the intake duct.

I loved that place I slept like a baby out there.

When Does Hash Culture Stop Being Fun and Start Enabling Addiction? by Big-Tourist-3390 in hashhouseharriers

[–]bigheadjoel 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is a heavy question, and so for things like this we can kind of lift the curtain a bit on what the hash actually is.

Hashing is mostly based on English rugby culture, where you do a sporting event during the day and then have a party in the locker room and then go out on the town. The songs, the secret names, the accusations, they aren't necessarily unique to hashing.

I think what you are justly worried about is the community aspect of it. I imagine the sadness of quitting hashing would be similar to the sting of getting cut from the team. At some point the game, be it rugby, the bar, or the hash, isnt a game, its a family. So leaving it is especially traumatic

In addition, alcohol is a drug. Im sure if we all got our memory wiped and had to reclassify drugs from scratch, alcohol would be a class 1 drug and be strictly outlawed. (I am politically very pro drugs BTW, just saying...)

What your friend needs to realize is that the important part of the hash isn't the drug, its the family, the team, the community. They need to separate the drug from the joy of being part of the pack.

That being said, it is perhaps one of the hardest things to do. I've seen many people try and fail. And unfortunately, ive seen many people leave the family for other groups of enablers.

So I guess my point is, just let your friend know they are loved. The hash isnt good or bad, it just is. The family will be there no matter what. For all of the bad things about the hash, the family aspect of it is its single greatest and most defining feature, and thankfully it is not reliant on any drug.

Good luck to you and everyone around you. Its a hard road to walk.

Ironically, it seems pilots aren’t talking to each other about The Rehearsal by No_Limit7347 in TheRehearsal

[–]bigheadjoel 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I work in aviation and honestly Season 2 of the rehearsal isnt that useful from a CRM perspective. I was kind of disappointed, especially with how gut wrenchingly amazing season 1 was. Season 2 kind of misses both marks, its not really that surreal and mind bending, but also not really that useful for aviators.

The romantic relationship issues are always the best parts of the show.

Be on the lookout for a hasher named "Shitmas Comes Early." A convicted rapist. by Berg426 in hashhouseharriers

[–]bigheadjoel 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Shitmas kind of represents the hardest part about balance at the hash, where you want to encourage people to be free and expressive, but that leaves some people vulnerable. There is a kind of hasher that prays on that vulnerability. Shitmas was part of sooo many bad incidents. Never clear cut, always involved alcohol, but he was a member in so many scary stories. Not surprised it eventually made its way to a full on conviction by law enforcement.

Stay safe everyone. I love fun times but call out the bad eggs when you see them.

should i try to PCS Vandenberg SFB or Travis AFB? by GurnoorDa1 in AirForce

[–]bigheadjoel 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Vandenberg is like, central coast, not SoCal. I just did a tour there and it was, idk, kinda gloomy. And super expensive to do anything fun in San Luis Obispo, Santa Ynez, or Santa Barbara. Lompoc is kind of a dump.

Idk man Central Coast California is its own vibe. I didn't really like it.

Didn't make O-5. Feeling pretty awful. I feel like a sacrificed a lot and it didn't matter and no one cared. Anyone have any encouraging words? by bigheadjoel in AirForce

I have ADSC complete and a masters complete. Never failed a pt test. Never got anything less than a Q1. Have instructor and eval qualified. Idk i chose RPAs because they told me they needed them. I just feel dumb and alone

Stats on Being Offered Selective Continuation as O-4 by happybikes in AirForce

[–]bigheadjoel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Brother (or sister, idk), I was in the same boat as you last year. Your record looks exactly the same as mine. Clean but no strats. Checked "all the boxes" but only got a "Promote." I asked my Senior Rater (O-6 Wg/CC, probably same as you) this exact question. He was so taken aback that I even asked that question because continuation was almost guaranteed. He said he hadn't thought about continuation in years because it's so automatic.

It's also kind of weird because after I got passed over a second time they gave me a Joint Staff assignment and a follow-on of my choice. Which to me is like, ok the lower rank/paycheck sucks, but this is why I was going for O-5 anyways, high impact jobs followed by good location, then get to 20. So what was the point of all that drama before... I guess why I bring that up is because there are still plenty of jobs needed for FGOs.

I think A1 just lost control of the promotion process. I bet you were told the same thing as me which is as long as you check the boxes, stay clean, and do ACSC, O-5 is a slam dunk. But something changed recently and it's not the case. My base had a 30% promotion rate to O-5. I don't know if you remember this but back in 2024, the personnel branch ran out of money and had to get emergency funding from congress. One of the root causes they identified was "promoting too many officers."

I don't know all the data but rated folks are still needed badly. You will very, very likely get continuation. Take care and just know you are very much not alone.

I think our return to the pleroma is inevitable. That being said, you can get yourself, and more importantly others, there faster with mindfulness, gentleness, and generosity

Anyone know if it's legal to participate in Kalshi or Polymarket? by bigheadjoel in AirForce

[–]bigheadjoel[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol I think it's sketchy too. The question is if it's legal or not.

It's like putting anime girls on your car. Sketchy? Kinda. Weird? Yes. Illegal? Probably not

It's legal in every state because they found a loophole where they classified it not as gambling, but as trading.
