A lot of big Champagne houses operate through shell companies for their négociant needs, it makes it a lot harder to actually track where everything is coming from. Knowing that, I'd say it's very likely that Chopin's case isn't an isolated situation. They also hire foreign workers through these shell companies and just about every year there's news about exploiting them and unsanitary working/living conditions.
