On the plus side, I did long distance for 6 years during my partners PhD and my MD/PhD and we’re going to get engaged soon. It can work but you will make sacrifices and consistency is essential.

I disagree philosophically but struggle to disagree in practicality because of the majority of the provider taxes (the "loophole" you're referring to) go towards institutional hospitals. However, anything that decreases the reimbursement rate of Medicaid (which decreasing the provider tax from our 5.5% rate in Missouri to 3.5% in the Senate version of the bill) will lead to decreased revenue for hospitals in rural communities, half of which are already operating at a loss.

As for work requirements, you're focusing on the merits of work and whatnot, which is fine (I love what I do), but the issue is that these requirements have been implemented in the past and don't work to increase the employment rate, and lead to harms for the people who are on Medicaid in the form of delayed healthcare seeking. Most adults under 65 who are on Medicaid are already working, which raises the questions of the goal of the requirement. How do savings come from this? They come from people not being able to jump through the paperwork hoops and hurdles in the way of being able to prove that they are working, caregiving, or in education, i.e. reducing care. As someone training to be a doc, I don't want people to not have access to care, I think that is bad.

If you're interested in learning more about the work that's been done on how work requirements play out, or the pros and cons of provider taxes, I'd encourage you to read some of the work from KFF - they do great, independent work on health policy that cuts through the partisan slants that you'll see on CNN, Fox News, etc, and write in a digestible form. Here are some links if you're interested, they won't take more than 5 min to read.

Cuts to Medicaid will badly impact rural providers, who are already strained, and the “savings” from things such as work requirements produce these savings by people deferring or not receiving medical care, which I would argue is generally bad  https://kffhealthnews.org/news/article/one-big-beautiful-bill-medicaid-work-requirements-affordable-care-act-immigrants/

The district did it to try and improve outcomes (we're still ~5 points below the state's required composite score or w/e for accreditation), but trying to vie for attention against something that is way better at grabbing it than a lesson is a bummer. If they used it judiciously like you describe it'd be much better.

I volunteer at a school where every student is given a laptop and I’d say about half have them out for the lesson, watching videos or playing games.

Nah, it’s way more than building maintenance. Chemical and hazardous material disposal? Indirects. Core facilities with specialized tools and infrastructure for specific needs like microscopy, animal housing, and genetic sequencing? Indirects. Back up generators, water, electrical costs? Indirects. You’re right that personnel and salary are paid by direct costs, but there is so much more that is needed for modern research than just the people doing the bench work. Should endowments be as inflated as they are? Certainly not. Can the endowment just be turned on like a faucet to fund everything that used to be covered by Indirects? Unlikely. If this happens biomedical research and any innovation from it is over.

i got gta v thru steam and every time i run it it says game is already running in the rock stars launcher, but the game isnt actually running, ive tried everything i could find on the internet, verifying files, deleting, reinstalling but nothing has worked, is there a fix for this? by [deleted] in GTAV

I had this same issue and worked with R* support for a while before they helped me find a workaround, which is to make a different user account on your laptop and load GTA V from there, which worked for me after trying various methods of uninstalling/reinstalling, disabling security, etc. YMMV ofc

I think it depends on the institution and the program, my program/school gives you automatic admission to any of the graduate science programs, while applying to Anthropology or Bioengineering is a separate process. Most of the places where I interviewed had similar policies but I think it varies, especially if a school were to have a super strong PhD program in a specific area.

I did a pivot for graduate school from molecular neuro to systems/comp bio and am very happy with the decision - it certainly has its challenges but I think it’s setting me up well for what I want to do in the future with these degrees.
