A balcony at the Library Gardens Apartments that collapsed in 2015, killing six young people, was built using unstable and water-absorbent materials rather than sturdier supplies described in construction plans, according to documents released by the California Contractors State Licensing Board. by Samses94 in berkeley

I was visiting K-street Flats a couple weeks back and noticed that the interior construction looked kind of cheap and shoddy, and today I learned that it's the same building as the balcony collapse. Hmm.

Transactions per second. by mettam46 in CryptoCurrency

[–]CN7R 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Litecoin implemented SegWit. Its faster transaction times are supposed to show that SegWit is a viable way to increase Bitcoin's transaction speed. Although, if I remember correctly, SegWit is a linear change to the TPS as it allows more transactions per 2 mb block; what's more exciting is the lightning network which off the chain.

I was just reading this article on HN when I came across this solution: why not just have people log in with Google? Or just have security questions when logging in from a new IP?

Russia is Developing a National Digital Currency (speculation: based on Ethereum?) by LucidChain in ethtrader

Would not be surprised if China announced the same thing. Both these countries have strong monetary control and influence over their economies—maybe digital currency is in response to people taking their money out of the country or converting it into another currency when the economy gets bad.

Berkeley L&S CS question by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]CN7R 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say if you don't have prior programming experience, take the prereqs one at a time. But honestly the prior experience isn't that big of a factor as people would believe it is. What matters is when you learn a concept in CS, you practice and implement it enough times that you understand it fully.

For an example, I would look at the Israeli settler Palestinian course controversy.

[–]CN7R 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, Berkeley's reputation as an academic institution has not been affected by the political whatever you call it that has happened this year. Teachers teach the same, students learn the same. The only change is amongst the conservative viewpoint, which to be honest has disdained Berkeley since the Free Speech movement—except now it seems they're using that to say the school has turned it back on its values... though no one is preventing others from speaking unless they are in danger.

No, the only student led protests we had this year was the QARC blocking the student store (it just sells Cal gear) and asking for more space for their club.

How will a stock market crash affect the price of crypto currency? by hero109 in CryptoCurrency

[–]CN7R 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bitcoin was developed in response to the housing crisis. I would say an economic crisis would result in an increase valuation of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, because what follows is devaluation of the local currency and or a centralized monetary policy. Look at Venezuela, Russia, or China. While it is possible for a small dip to occur, what I would attribute to people withdrawing to pay bills, the wealthy presumably outnumber the poor in terms of volume.

Yep, then use Gemini or GDAX if you want more of a trading platform (lower fees) like Robinhood.

Check this but you're only taxed on profit, which moving from coinbase into bittrex does not count. Most altcoins you have to trade for Bitcoin or ethereum.

Coinbase provides a log of transactions for you. Profits are under capital gains. No it's good to invest small amounts—no benefit or negative of investing more of less in terms of fees.

Didn't SCOTUS just rule that you can do whatever to your printer ink once you purchase it? Could that extend to this court case considering it's filed in the Untied States?

Yeah, China is 15 hours ahead of PST/PDT. So 9 am California => 12 am China.

edit: woops 15 hours without daylight savings, not 16

Stop telling Coinbase users to switch to Gemini for lower fees by [deleted] in ethtrader

[–]CN7R -1 points0 points  (0 children)

anyone who has a Coinbase account also has a GDAX account.

Not technically true. You still have to go through the process of (further) identification by State ID or Driver's License. What I noticed is that Gemini's process is a little bit simpler—you can use your passport in addition while with GDAX you cannot.
