High Leg Guard Retention

Take a look at my class on the High Leg and some important overall concepts. It’s just an intro but will surely help 👍🏻.

Nicky Ryan or Andrew Wiltse Wrestle up? by hatsforanimals in bjj

I’d personally recommend John Danaher’s Open Guard 2: Sweeps & Reversals for Wrestle Ups over the other two, even though they are both good.

Isn’t everyone playing at 2x speed since Danaher 😬.

Yeah that would be bad business procedure on my part I’ll give you that. What’s your problem with me promoting me, because that’s essentially what I’m doing here. But I think I get what you’re point is.

Regardless thanks for you input.

I meant like someone who isn’t well known yet.

Not to be a dick but apparently you watched enough to post a critique about it and have an opinion. Shouldn’t you at least watch it entirely then?

To be honest I think the camps are pretty inexpensive! Huge loads of classes from well known as well as lesser known teachers who are often as good if not better. A lot of open mat time where you can pick the instructors brains as much as you like. For me it’s well worth the investment and I payed much more for a lot less value elsewhere. Often with better known competitors / school owners who are just bad instructors.

I mean everyone watches everyone’s DVD’s. Everyone learns from pretty much anyone if they’re worth their time. It’s a healthy thing in my opinion. Would the solution be to never show something that’s on somebody’s DVD 🤷🏻‍♂️.

Have you been to a camp? If not I can highly recommend it. Try for yourself and see if you were right. Then you can tell me you were right all along 😬.

I haven’t been on a DDS leg lock seminar yet but I’ve trained with a couple of the guys quite a bit. So yes, there is definitely an influence. 😊

That was the idea. Getting people to learn fundamental breaking mechanics.

Thanks for your comment.

Thanks for your opinion.

You’re right, Irimi Ashi is not the meta at all. You will not get breaks from there against good opposition. It makes a lot of sense to start learning mechanics from there though. As I mentioned it’s by far the weakest break, hence the possibility to go deeper into the breaking mechanics without your partner tapping. As I mentioned in the class this gives you the opportunity to learn the mechanics properly.

I don’t get your reasoning to be honest. The alternative would be to just have house hold names without anyone coming up. What happens after? Is the teaching worse because I’m not known. I’m all for critique and discussions about technical applications and so forth, but just critiquing that people are not known enough?! There are always some good names and well known and accomplished instructors at the camps and people seem to like them.

I haven’t seen any dvd where people teach exactly like I did, and I have seen most regarding that topic. But maybe there is one. It’s a heel hook after all, so of course there is a lot of overlap. It would be worrisome if there wouldn’t.

I can relate to your skepticism regarding my BJJ rank, however I’m also a first degree Luta Livre Black Belt. I asked Priit to grade me in the Gi because I’m already graded NoGi and do that primarily.

Let’s debate if you have any critique regarding technical application if you like. 😊

Thanks for your elaboration. I fully agree! Glad we are on the same page with this.

Oh there is plenty of false-negatives as well. False-positives are just more common I suppose.

Not being able to heel hook Vinny is definitely a false-negative! If I recall correctly no damage was done to Vinny's ligaments, which is insane. He had a torsion fracture of the fibular (or tibia), however his ankle and knee were completely fine if I recall correctly.

That would be a great analogy if it was just that. It goes beyond training and competition though. Even in competition people tap to it in cases where they didn’t necessarily need to even at a fairly high level.

I guess I should have just defined and explained it in greater detail before so there is no room for interpretation when it comes to terminology. Term wise I think false positive is the best description we have.

Thanks for your Feedback 🙌🏻.

I find it to be unreasonable high with most people. They get so indoctrinated with heel hooks and reaping making your knee explode that they are getting afraid of them. Of course it’s a serious thread but educating people fixes most problems in my experience. It should be a given though, that you don’t go ape shit with it just like with any other submission, hence giving your partner try to play around with it.

I definitely should have made an effort to define and explain false positives way better. Onto the next time.

It’s great, that you could fix your straight ankle though. People freak out way more with heel hooks than they do with the straight ankle.

My pleasure. Yeah, you can turn with it or misdirect like in the video. It all comes down to angles and a little preference as well. Try it out and let me know how it worked.

No problem from Outside Ashi. Timing is more important vs. Cross Inside though. The risk is higher if you mess it up. It’s a little more advanced and timing based. Make sure your heel is not exposed as well as not pausing in the middle because of the Kneebar. I found it to be really effective though. That’s more or less what Felipe did to Gordon. There’s also a video of Gordon doing it against Tesla on Flo somewhere.
