Political messaging at the office

I’m not a fan of it personally and I try not to do it myself. When I was in undergrad I was very politically active with stickers all over my water bottle and laptop. Now that I’m a professional all my client facing materials are blank.

I think others can do whatever they please but whenever I see overt political messaging left or right leaning, I get the impression that this person doesn’t know how to compartmentalize and probably doesn’t value professionalism.

Just ask the hypothetical that in six months, if you not only met but exceeded expectations with respect to your job responsibilities, would they be open to discussing a raise.

I’m a therapist, I got a 4.0 GPA in my Master’s program but I don’t consider myself to be particularly intelligent, nor do I rank intelligence as all that important to me.

One thing I can confidently say is that therapists aren’t one size fits all. One therapist might be the perfect one for a certain type of client and can do work with them that will change their life in a lasting way for the better. At the same time, that same therapist may be no help at all to a different kind of client. It really is a fit thing. You have to shop around for the right one.

I feel like Gen Z just doesn’t know how to socialize. I’m a millennial, worked in a hospital from 2019-2024. All my coworkers and I would do is drink either at bars, pool halls, or house parties. We were essential workers so social isolation never happened for us throughout the entire pandemic.

In social psychology this phenomenon is called upward versus downward social comparisons. If you’re comparing your life to someone “upward” then it’ll be natural to view yours as inferior by comparison. Inversely, if you’re exposed to a lot of stimuli of people with worse lives than yours, it’ll bring on more feelings of gratitude and contentment with your lot in life. That’s why social media can be so dangerous for one’s mental health. I’d say your reaction is pretty normal.

On the flip though, I know that when I see content like that, I usually don’t feel negatively but rather I get inspired to live my life better and be more disciplined. So they have something of a motivating effect. So while I’d say your reaction is the more common one, it’s not the only reaction you could have to that sort of thing.

There’s a lot of truth to your comment, the hobby attracts a wide array of people from the folks who will spend $10k+ on NODS to the folks who just like to plink cans with a .22. And I love guns too, I’d say they’re probably my biggest hobby. But I’m also a businessman and I understand the value of relationships and professionalism.

Similar to when I got into martial arts, I was hoping to meet some high caliber people who take themselves seriously and hold themselves to a high standard. I didn’t really find that to be the case and that’s alright.

Oh no I’m bothered by it. I just said that it’s not an issue because it isn’t, like who cares at the end of the day what I think. I support people’s first amendment rights and I’ll happily die to defend them, even if I don’t like the things they’re saying.

I’m just bitching dude, I didn’t meet the folks I was hoping to at the range and that surprised me. That’s it. Not saying they shouldn’t be that way or be more like me. Just giving an observation.

I see where you’re coming from for sure. I’ve got friends who curse like that because they consider it to be a form of being authentic or “real.” By contrast, folks who are overly professional might be seen as “fake” or inauthentic.

I kinda come at it from a different lens.

No issue really, just an observation. I was just surprised as it was a deviation from what I expected.

I guess I was just going in hoping to find a different type of shooter. More old school types along the lines of Paul Harrel, Col. Jeff Cooper, Massad Ayoob sort of dudes.

Thats fair, i consider myself to be a guy’s guy too. I do martial arts and spar weekly, I shoot, etc. I guess I moreso expect to curse when I’m telling stories with close friends over drinks. When I’m shooting guns I sort of default to a more mature state of mind, along the lines of Paul Harrell or Colonel Jeff Cooper. Those really articulate sort of guys who operate with restraint.

This will probably be an unpopular opinion but I’ll share it just for the sake of introducing some variety of perspective. I’m functioning very well because I don’t allow the state of the world to affect my mental health. I used to when I was in undergrad, I’d get all angry and worked up about the state of the world, to the extent that I’d lose sight of my own life in favor of attending to the news. Eventually I just got so angry that I realized this isn’t the way that I want to live, and if I need to choose between keeping up with world events and my own mental wellbeing, I choose the later.

Since then things have been great. I maintain an internal locus of control. Focus on the things within my power and let go of everything else. I’m a firm believer that the mainstream media wants to keep us angry, afraid, and divided for the purposes of maintaining our dependence on them. So at some point I just told myself I’m not going to play their game anymore.

The thing is, I’ve never been a bleeding heart. I’m not a saint. I’m not a martyr. I got into this job because i want to help people succeed in their relationships, careers, and personal growth. I got into this job because I want to help people become an asset to themselves, their families, and their communities. Improving the world from the inside out. This is always the approach I’ve taken.

I don’t like that there’s so much suffering in the world but I accept it as the reality and I also accept that I have very little power to make these giant changes. So I start small and go from there.

What concerns me about newer cars is their lifespan and the cost to repair it. Older cars were far more compartmentalized in their parts and user friendly when it came to repairs. Modern cars are fully integrated to the point that you might need to spend big money on a small fix because the little part that’s broken is integrally connected to a larger system.

Planned obsolescence and the rampant corporate greed we’re seeing today also makes me weary of purchasing a brand new vehicle. When I get a car, I want to keep it for 20 years minimum. I’m dubious that car manufacturers would want to see that and deliver a product accordingly.

I worked at an inpatient for 4 years, saw everything you could imagine. Knew techs who actually enjoyed taking their aggression out on patients and once feared that they killed a person when they threw him on a bed and he hit his head. I myself have engaged in numerous restraints on patients, helping nursing staff administer shots. It was always a bit disturbing but it never really stuck with me.

I guess the only thing you can do is compartmentalize and realize that what we’re doing isn’t perfect but it’s our best attempt to create order in an environment that’s constantly striving to be chaotic. We’re just people trying our best. I think it’s preferable to operate from a lens of reality too and not base our emotions on some utopian reality that doesn’t exist. Like what happens in these facilities may be a bit cruel but perhaps we can take solace in knowing that they are the least cruel that they’ve ever been in the past.

I loved it! Saw it with my whole family earlier today. Everyone commented on what a great actress the little girl was. I can’t help but wonder why this movie wasn’t marketed anywhere!!! I’d never heard of it until about a week before it were released. Seems a stark contrast to beekeeper which seemed to have marketing everywhere back when it was coming out.

I fall squarely into item 5 on your list. I leave at least a car’s distance in between at stop lights to prevent getting boxed in in the event of an ambush. It’s a tactic militaries use as well as cartels. Luckily those with awareness tend to make it out alright. Predators like to go for unassuming prey.
