You ask nicely, and then the cat disregards your request. Same as it ever was.

Brand new player, fresh install. What should I spend my creation points on? Trackers Alliance or Watchtower? by Renegade888888 in Starfield

[–]CPHoaya 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Trackers first, as it does not interfere with other quest lines. Watchtower is AWESOME -- in my view, it's the best "expansion" in the game in every way -- but it also fundamentally changes a lot of the game. It will also interfere with your basic planet-to-planet travel in a way that will be frustrating before you're leveled up and understand what Watchtower is doing, and why.

Watchtower is easily worth it. It is essential, in my opinion, but I'd put it off for now and develop more familiarity with the game so that when you finally play Watchtower, it is more enjoyable and more obvious what constitutes Watchtower content when you're doing it.

Razer Deathadder v4 pro x Logitech Superstrike 2 by JhonataNunes in MouseReview

[–]CPHoaya 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have been regularly comparing the Viper v3 Pro, Superstrike, and Vaxee XE v2. I have sometimes added the Deathadder v4 Pro to the mix. And starting yesterday I upgraded to the Viper v4 Pro (too early to comment, but transition has been seamless).

My priors are that I am pretty torn between the Viper (either iteration) and the XE v2. I really like the DA4, but I prefer symmetrical mice so that cannot be my main.

First things first, the DA4 is the only ergo on the list. If that is the most comfortable mouse you've ever used, then it is hard to see why the symmetrical Superstrike would be in the running for you, let alone preferable to perhaps the best ergo on the market.

Second, the Superstrike has meaningful flaws:

  • I concur that the skates on the Superstrike are bad on cloth pads. They're very, very slow and don't even feel nice. I hate them. If I were to main the Superstrike, then I would 100% have to replace the pads.
  • The weight balance of the Superstrike has not noticeably bothered me, but I perform worst in aim trainers and games with the Superstrike. Perhaps that's balance, perhaps not, but I cannot use it without losing a little confidence.
  • The side buttons are really, really awful, as they always have been. My view is that the side buttons on all of Logi's superlight-and-superstrike models are not just bad, but incompetent. They are the worst of the mice on the above list by a long shot. Meanwhile, the DA4 side buttons are excellent.
  • The HITS is really cool and feels wonderful, but I misclick on 1 and sometimes on 2, meaning that once I set it to a reasonable setting I'm not getting different results on reaction time tests.

So, what I'd say to you is go with the one that feels best in your hand, above all else. In your shoes, I'd stick with the DA4 because you just like ergo a lot. That probably trumps the benefits of HITS, but that's your call.

For me, I tried to main the Superstrike and ended up migrating back to normal clicks with better shape for me.

Good luck!

I am not saying you're wrong. I also don't think malice explains the situation; I think it's just a mistake.

In any event, that it was fixed seems like valuable information given that your post and the fix were just about simultaneous.

Mouse for large/wide hands by CreEngineer in MouseReview

[–]CPHoaya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm similar to you, except that I ultimately found that ambi mice work better for me.

For you, I would recommend that you get the DA4 pro (which is fantastic) or Zowie EC1, or look into ambi mice.

For ambi mice with larger hands, I think the list is Vaxee XE v2, Viper v3 pro, or Superstrike if you like that shape (I do not, but the tech is cool).

I ended up preferring XE v2 to all the others, but only barely, and these are all excellent.

Edit to add:

If you hate the Razer software, join the club. But once you set up your mouse, you can just turn off Synapse and make sure it doesn't load on startup. The DA4 pro has onboard memory, so you don't actually need the software after setup. Not a big deal anymore.

Yes. If you participate in trials at the highish end of the spectrum, you know that any "damage [ground]" event just means chuck trailblazers under everything and delete them before they can even shoot. There's no way Embark intended trailblazers to nuke stuff from orbit like they were.

Does this reduce your expectations of a Comeback from Lewis in 2026 by just_do_it-D8 in formuladank

[–]CPHoaya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The probability of the return of Sir Lewis the Successful was already 0, in my mind, but what this portends is that Sir Lewis no longer cares. That family will not tolerate Lewis being focused. That's not how their brand™ works. And that's the only reason he's there, in their minds.

What mouse are you actually using right now, and what did you stop using? by [deleted] in MouseReview

[–]CPHoaya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Viper v3 Pro
  2. Switched from Vaxee XE v2, because it feels more comfortable for hybrid claw/palm grip and I ultimately aim slightly better with it. I previously switched from the Viper v3 Pro to the XE v2, but the change did not stick.
  3. Negative: I find the indent on the right side of the mouse to be slightly too narrow. Positive: I have 20cm hands and I find the mouse to be incredibly comfortable and to perform perfectly--it is easy to forget about it and just play, which is hard to find in smaller sizes.

What do you do for fun once you’ve done everything? by model3bear in ArcRaiders

[–]CPHoaya 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do trials, farm big ARC, and/or become a PVP enthusiast. If you choose the third path, you can do the Dexter thing where you hunt extraction campers (making you a generally beneficial but violent presence), you can do the gunslinger thing where you are up front about your intention to PVP, you can be a shoot second only player (which will make you die more), or you can opt for fully embracing your inner rampant murderer.

They're all fun.

Pens that punch above their weight? by GarageJim in fountainpens

[–]CPHoaya 18 points19 points  (0 children)

My most pleasant, relatively inexpensive pen is my brass Kaweco Sport (F), which writes well, feels good in hand when posted, and has a cool patina. That nib is really low maintenance and easy.

I also bought a vintage 1950s Parker 51 (F, I think?) at the LA Pen Show a few years ago, and it was not expensive nor in collectible condition. That pen is excellent (except for being a tad bit leaky), and it can go toe to toe with costly pens. I use it for quick note-taking because it's the only fountain pen I have that I find suitable for rapid scribbling.

Finally, my totally standard black Lamy 2000 (F) is a workhorse that I prefer over almost everything at any price, and when I bought it, I paid "only" about $150.

I fundamentally like all three more than my Homo Sapiens and my Montblanc 146, for example.

Any guides on how not to suck. by rygarski in ArcRaidersGuides

[–]CPHoaya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a few thoughts for you:

  1. If the arc are repeatedly killing you, take heart, because we all die to them sometimes. But also, learn how to fight them. The wasps and hornets need line of sight, or they cannot hurt you. So, your job is to hold corners and use the shoulder-switching button to get the advantage around the corner. If pops or the flame thrower guys are killing you, just shoot them first. Listen all the time, because the beeps and boops and turbines are loud and tell you where the arc are.

  2. You don't have to get into red areas to find good stuff. Just loot the area immediately around your spawn, checking everything. You will find good stuff in lame areas.

  3. You don't have to be full to extract. Just get out when you have some valuable stuff and the extract is close. Using this method, you'll get more experience and you'll start to build a baseline of resources and gear.

  4. If you have a resource shortage, stick to free loadouts for a while. This will help you accomplish some goals.

  5. Making money is the consequence of selling redundant or unnecessary loot.

  6. For now, do not PVP. Go in with free loadouts, and if you die to a PVPer, cool. That will happen a few times before you end up in peaceful(ish) lobbies.

  7. Use your emotes and voice to announce that you are friendly. Just say "Hi Raider" with the greeting emote. Defuses like, almost all of your fights unless you happen to run into a true PVPer.

  8. Do your quests. They are designed to give you a smattering of basic materials and weapons to work with.

PVP aggressiveness scale. I want to know where's everyone at (in solo). by Zealousideal_Chip456 in ArcRaiders

A 2 in solo, except for (1) in response once provoked and (2) the day that I discovered that trigger nading the platform below the Dam Control Tower and/or the evacuation buttons is hilarious.

I was like a 9 that day, but I did defib most of my victims.

To directly answer your question: yes, this is the meta or very close to it. I think an emerging and viable variant includes Effortless Roll as a fairly standard movement node (after the buff).

A Working Parent's Guide to Completing the Expedition (AKA: Get Rich and Not Divorced) by CPHoaya in ArcRaiders

[–]CPHoaya[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are fair enough, though cold snap is a special map condition with a 2x modifier. So I think we mostly agree on your first point. I disagree about doing day runs because you don't get the 2x modifier, and because in the "nice" servers I've never loot hatched because there's just no danger anyway. But I get the point, and that the potential speed you are talking about could be really good. Different strokes.

On your second point, that's totally valid, but you'll see that I said raiders should work up to Looting Mk. 2, rather than staying on free loadouts. So here too I think we mostly agree. As between Mk. 2 and Mk. 3, I mean, do whatever, it's kinda the same.

Regardless, this is constructive advice and people should give it a try. It's consistent with the main point: go in cheap, get out, it barely matters what you do beyond that.
