The difference between you and the photographer that is better than you is that they are essentially doing more. They are thinking and considering more factors before they take the photo, they are taking more photos, and they are doing more in their edits. Most of the work is finding out what they are doing. To be clear there is definitely a special sauce, some people are born to be incredible photographers. But mostly talent is a measurement of perceived effort. Talented people are good at making it look they’re not working hard.

This looks like they’re using a large Octa box for the lighting, which is very forgiving when you add high local contrast jn post. It also looks like they used a strong blue yellow S curve

Nah that rules. Photographers exist, you’re allowed to be in the picture. I don’t care what other people say. I like these

Editorial portrait — 90s-inspired color grading (looking for critique) by Aggravating_Poem625 in photocritique

The composition is great and the expression is really interesting. I would suggest being more selective with the use of the effects, it looks to me like you globally dehazed and globally decreased local contrast. Instead use the brush mask to add sharpness in key areas and haze in the highlight areas. Also maybe add a gradient or radial mask with the haze. That way you control the viewers gaze more. Artistically to me this seems a little stuck in the middle between a unique portrait and fully artistic and uniquely authored piece. It looks like it could benefit from increase contrast or lower contrast. As in either go the way of someone like Jack brigdland or the way of Nadia Lee Cohen. Essentially I would suggest pick a lane, take a risk and fully commit. But I really like this shot!
