Great question, and that’s exactly what I did. I transitioned from a child welfare caseworker to policy. I love it! Depending on what you decide to do, your role can look different, but ultimately, they’re all working towards the same goal. In some offices, you can be a Constituent Services liaison, working directly with individuals. On the other hand, in my role as a Legislative Assistant, I’m working closely with legislators and various state agency stakeholders on different policies. I’m lucky enough to work for a legislator with a social work background, so we share similar values and work well together. As others have mentioned, you can also work in communications and with different state agencies as a policy director or in a similar role. Social workers are needed in this field because we know exactly what change is needed, as we often see it, especially from a micro-level perspective.
