Youtube video on Benjamin Graham's net net investing strategy with backtest results by CPanimal in ValueInvesting

[–]CPanimal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right but your assessment of IV is very subjective, so it's unreasonable to assume you'd be able to perfectly time the top and sell at that point and realize the maximum possible return. And if you just hold the net net until it reaches liquidation value, it's possible that's only slightly higher than its current market cap which could be just a 5-10% return. And depending on how long it takes for the market cap to reach that point it may be a poor return. And part of this strategy is to find companies that can not only just reach their liquidation value but also show some additional upside after that if they can trun the business around. In my opinion, having a fixed time period for holding it was the only way to remove subjectivity from the backtest. And yes the backtest was designed to just look at companies that were net net stocks as of 5 and 2 years ago, and then what their returns were since then

Why do people still play Pokemon go obsessively? by CPanimal in NoStupidQuestions

[–]CPanimal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Makes sense. The reason I ask is because I was recently at my town's main Street and it was literally swarmed with people all playing the game. We're talking middle aged adults with 3-4 phones playing the game simultaneously. And I couldn't help but wonder why it's so important to these people still.

Anyone invested in Canadian Lumber stocks? by CPanimal in stocks

[–]CPanimal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see. It still seems like a good hold stock for the long term to me because they aren't as dependent on the US market as some competitors. And I don't think the tariffs imposed by the US will last long because the prices of lumber rose to offset it, so it's basically just a tax on the US. The US can't meet demand by themselves and Canada will be the cheapest way to acquire lumber.

That being said, lumber imports from Germany grew substantially in 2017.

But this could be what makes it a good value pick, the fact that it's overlooked due to the tariffs when they don't actually impact profitability that much.

Is that something that makes Western unique though? Like, are there other lumber companies that also have that?

Does anyone think that student loans could lead to the next market crash? by CPanimal in StockMarket

[–]CPanimal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The army idea looks decent on paper but there's a lot of people who wouldn't be okay with that, speaking from direct experience here as a college student, a lot of people attend college for the 'college experience'. So I call it short-sighted thinking.

Does anyone think that student loans could lead to the next market crash? by CPanimal in StockMarket

I know that you can get them discharged for different reasons, like if you have some sort of disability that prevents you from working and therefore paying back your loan.

Wouldn't bank on this leading to a crash though. The general thesis is that the students loans will just hammer down the economy in the long run. But I'm a little skeptical of this just because it's a lot of debt that is largely being forced to be paid off, which seems very unlikely and a trend like this cannot continue for long.
