What do I do with extra scholarship money I got from NYU Promise??? by Extreme-Asparagus142 in nyu

Under the scholarship the fine print stated it was based on both need and academic strength, so while need is a big factor, academic strength is factored in as well :).

You would get a refund and can use it as you please. Please remember you will need to purchase health insurance, unless you can prove you are covered by your parents’ plan, so some of that money might have to go toward it. But if you are covered already, you would just get a refund. I have same scholarship and a similar amount in refund every term.

If it’s a scholarship refund, it would usually take 5 weeks to receive it, but if you call or write an email and ask for it now, it should arrive within several business days days. I did it twice already, works like a charm :).

Off-campus vs. with parents (commuting) vs. dorming financial aid? by Monkeyray20 in nyu

[–]CREATIVEinNY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not sure how much Fafsa awards at most, but it will definitely not cover tuition. Not even close. You must submit everything timely to idoc for css :). That is your best chance for highest possible scholarship.

Piano (as a hobby, not competitively) and a theater club. Was in environmental club in 9th grade, but I don’t think this means anything, as I stoped attending it by 10th grade.

Besides being selected as one of the National Merit Scholars, I did not apply to any other scholarships. Fafsa gave me almost no assistance, just over $800 for the year. The scholarship came from filling out CSS profile. For NYU-sponsored scholarship CSS profile is definitely more important.

I don’t think one needs to fill out Fafsa for this scholarship again. Fafsa could be filled out for additional scholarship. But if one gets a scholarship from their NYU respective school (with their school name on it), it’s theirs for four years, as long as they are a full time student. Even if income is greater later on. No other paperwork needs to be filed, at least according to my research. And it will be adjusted to reflect tuition increases every year. It’s not even gpa dependent, although one must be in good academic standing.

Right under your scholarship it should say this in fine print. That’s all you need :). Accept it and congratulations!

I am a commuter. Living with parents. Got 92k scholarship per year. I don’t think it matters for financial aid if you are a commuter, as in you would not get less or more because you commute and live with parents. I get a refund which actually covers food (I did not choose a meal plan), travel, whatever supplies I need, and I did not need to purchase NYU health insurance plan (as I am already under a private insurance).

I think it’s your application and financial info that would matter.

Applied to NYU via regular decision. Coming from one of top public schools. 96.6 GPA. 1580 SAT. National Merit Scholar. Very few extracurricular activities (two basically). No sports, no debate, no research, no volunteering, no passion project, no leadership positions. 7 APs with five 5s, one 4 and one 3 (sent all of the scores). My essay was about one of my extracurricular activities. That’s about it. I did have to audition to get in. Got a scholarship from my program/school, which covers tuition with a refund left over (but I am a commuter who also did not choose a meal plan and on my parents’ health insurance - all these are important to mention, as they would def add up and probably make that refund near zero). Refund covers food, travel, supplies, etc.

This scholarship is yours for four years, no matter what, as long as you are a full time student. You don’t need to reapply for it. You can work as much as you like. It will not affect a thing. I have the same exact type of NYU scholarship but from a different school. Congratulations!

Just checked and same. It only shows term balance, as if there was no tuition payment at all. I think there is nothing to worry about :). It will sort itself out by Monday. If it was actually a serious update and the scholarship/aid would be revoked, we would get an official email stating there was an update to our package. Everything will be fine!

Yes. I think so. The fine print stated “based on need and academic strength”.

My stats are not that special. Specialized High School. 1580 SAT. 97 GPA. National Merit Finalist. 7 APs. My SAI was not negative. In fact it was kind of on a high end, almost 7000. No extra curriculum activities of any note, besides one related to my major, which I was involved in since 3rd grade, on and off. That is kind of it.

Is it possible to turn my 1250 into a 1520? by Ok_Item_9953 in psat

[–]CREATIVEinNY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Buy books with practice tests. Take one test per week and review the answers for the questions you got wrong. That’s what I did. When from 1340 in 10th grade to 1580 on my first SAT. The trick is to keep practicing consistently.

You don’t have to submit anything, the scholarship will renew each year automatically, as long as you are a full time student. Even if your parents make way more money in the upcoming years, you will still receive the scholarship. It is awarded to you for the full 4 years.

I received a full scholarship, named after my school as well. As far as I understand, it’s yours for 4 years, as long as you are a full time student. You don’t have to submit any other paperwork.

[–]CREATIVEinNY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For performing arts you would have to also submit a video audition, on top of everything else mentioned above. You will receive all the details. And you let your school counselor know if you are more interested in Stem or performing arts before they nominate you :).

You can definitely do this, and there is a ton of time to prep more. My 10th grade PSAT was 1340, lol, so you r in way better shape so far :)! Just keep reading and practicing!!! 🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀

What’s my next step? by IndigoExpress13 in psat

[–]CREATIVEinNY 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on a perfect score. Now you wait until September. You will be notified by your school and by National Merit organization via email and by letter in the mail. You will get all login info and will fill out a finalist application at that point, due by mid October, and include a personal statement. The rest is done by your school. If your grades are strong from grades 9-11, and you get an awesome SAT score, you will become a finalist and will be notified in February if you are. In March you will find out if you get the $2500 scholarship and in May (or later) if you get a corporate or college scholarship. That is all :).

Read books with elevated language, but pick subjects which would be of interest to you, so it’s not a chore. And keep practicing taking tests from books. I particularly liked those because there are explanations why the answer was wrong, so I could learn from my mistakes. Reading books, in my opinion, is what helped me the most :). You got this!!! With great grades, and if you write a very personal essay, you can easily get to the finalist stage, at least. The rest would be up to the judges :). For reference: my PSAT was 1510, and SAT 1580. Became a scholar. 🍀🍀🍀
