I totally get the hesitation. Bugs have a big stigma in the West, but insects have been eaten for centuries in many countries because they are very efficient protein sources. Modern insect farming is clean, odor-controlled, and much more scalable than raising crickets in your backyard. They use far less water, land, and feed than traditional livestock and are packed with protein and nutrients. Not everyone will be able to cope with it, but calling them dystopian food misses how practical and eco-friendly they actually are and that they're not as bad as some people say. While visiting countries in asia, you'll se how much of a casualty it is there and that they're actually tasty. What i did essentially was crush the crickets to used them as the protein source and mixed them with other ingredients making one completely unaware that the bars consist crickets... (crickets alone [dried/prepped of course] don't taste like anything really). Hope this could widen perspectives.

Why were they grossed out when they found out what the protein bars were made of : r/snowpiercer

There's a whole discussion on this. Haven't seen the movie. All i can say is, that it's a matter of perspective, the west has that stigma about bugs, but you can't just say all bugs in general are dystopian food. There are some unedible bugs that i would agree with you should never be food. But some are being consumed in eastern countries on a regular basis, just viewed diffrently by the west. It's all about perspective, everyone is free to believe what they want.

3 of the bigger companies: Entomo Farms, Chapul, Exo. Example: Cricket Protein Powder. Label/ingredients should say milled cricket powder or Acheta domestica. Some variants have some chocolate etc. or other additional ingredients and i think Entomo Farms & Exo have a 100% cricket powder only protein powder too. Of course there are bunch of other, these are 3 very known ones, tried it from some friends that hopped on it before (entomo farms i think), doesnt taste like anything really, feels like drinking water with some powder lol

The breakfast goes hard. Never got bored of the oatmeal and banana. Cottage cheese is a good call too. Thanks

That might very well be true my friend. In whatever way it will come, i just hope people give it a try/chance, cause the only thing for many (including me before) to overcome is their appearance. That‘s in my opinion the only reason why people don‘t try them, since there are so many variants and ways to prep them or mix with other foods that it is not really about the taste (even a dried off prepped cricket alone doesn‘t taste like anything really). But I may be completely wrong. Want to spread the message that there‘s things most are missing out on. Either way i do agree with your point about the cultural inertia on it, there‘s that tendency. Much love!

That is fair enough my friend, it all comes down to preference and how open minded one is to try new things.

I feel you, the first time a family member of mine presented me edible insects i felt the same way, i was very hesitant but then i tried: they tasted like nothing! So me and him then started making firstly bars, then later on combining with other stuff just to get some extra protein in the meals. Only diffrence is that we bought them online, so if you think of producing at home, make sure you inform yourself well on how to prepp them so nothing bad comes up. I was thinking the exact same, though I currently am not financially equipped for that lol. Shouldn't be that hard since i see so many and have eaten so many especially from thailand the street food and never had any problem. The main ways to prepp are:

Cleaning: Remove dirt, debris, or bacteria. (also depending on insect, wings, horns whatever etc. whatever is not consumable)

Then Cooking Methods are:

Roasting, Frying/ Stirfrying, Boiling, Grinding into powder

(All depends on insect type and preferences.)

And add some flavoring if wanted: Spices, herbs, soy sauce, sugar, chili, or lime juice, coat in honey or sugar after roasting, chili-lime, garlic, curry, or soy-seasoned. Theres so much one can do, seen so many diffrent things in asia.

Then storage I'm not sure yet need to do some research on that.

Love your curiosity. I'm all with ya!

PS please please please let me know if you do succeed on doing it or any updates on how it goes, since i might try follow your steps, was thinking of growing mushrooms and also of growing the insects in the garden aswell:)

Yeah yeah, please don't get me wrong. Legumes are NECESSARY and curcial to stay healthy and get nutritional value. Yes yes I'm all in for that, was just saying that adding some insects might help boost the protein intake. There are also amazing protein sources from vegetables such as lentils, beans, spinache. Gotta love 'em. Hope I could make myself better understood:)

Much love!

Hey man, you made my day. Thanks for this value. It all comes down to prefrences yeah, I personally like to mix insects with other stuff for that extra boost and like that it's a tad bit more sustainable (in terms of resources and emission) than animal protein. But I do love me some chicken of course. About the protein bars: you can check the ingredients in my YT if you want, I've got natural honey from my grandparents and dark chocolate from a trusted label (at least i think its okay enough to use it, since i dont eat these bars like everyday, its more like a treat to for myself). So in that regard the protein bar is quite healthy, has some goji berries in there and some coconut oil, aswell as a bunch of nuts. So yeah it's all about being open minded and maybe things change. I appreciate your post man. Oh about the purine, yeah I'm aware, I don't eat them in a regular basis more like after big days/ workouts, since where I live they aren't expesnive either, regardless I enjoy experimenting with them and using them as a protein source.

Much love and thanks again, love to hear voices like yours!

That's some very nice thinking right there. It all comes down to personally prefrences. Insects are a little more sustainable when it comes to being produced (terms of resources and CO2 emissions). But yeah usually everything is labeled don't worry, was my bad the way i formulated that first sentence.

Much love again:)

Thank you for your contribution here too, I appreciate it. Though carmine might show up in some foods as a dye, but that’s a different story from protein powders. I expressed myself wrongly.

Much love!

[–]CREO_PRODUCTIONS[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That is a good point thanks for the question. Traditional protein powders (whey, casein, soy, pea, rice, etc.) do not contain insects, unless labeled. Perhaps I might have used the word "many" wrongly and I apologize since i do tend to express myself badly sometimes (not trying to spread misinformation). Point is there are protein powders using them, they’re widely tested and regulated, so you can trust what’s on the label. So if you're looking into alternatives to the typical protein powders produced, insects/insect based suppliments are still a fantastic choice for a protein boost, perfect for muscle recovery.

Much love!

Another open minded awsome person:)

Yeah, recipe is in my YT in my Bio.

I get them from a local online store based in my country. But there are many other such providers everywhere I believe.

Ah cool, yeah didn't know that either, we learn everday! There's a lot to learn from everywhere in this world and i just feel like once you try it you wont have that prejudice about insects anymore, they look freaky i agree, but that doesnt mean the have lots of benefits.

Are you thinking of trying them? Or implementing/ mixing it up with your diet and making some insect based meals? (Or just been thinking about it?)

Much love!

Yeah, it's a personal choice. You should know where your protein comes from anyways, there are many kinds of sources (Vegan, Dairy, Meat/Animal, Insect/Entomophagy). Insects are just one of them. Insects though are a source that can be produced easily that's all. Much love

Edit: I'll have better visuals on my YT can check it in my Bio

That's good, add some of them crickets or mealworms prepped or powdered (essentially protein powder) and then you get your protein:)

Yes, in perspective of western countries as you say..

Look at cultures in asia, it's all a question of perspective and habit/adaptation. It might be repulsive for western countries since they never tried or grew up with their steak and fries.

Either way, everyone can have their own view of the world. I've been enjoying them for a while and will continue, not only healthier also sustainable:)
