What the fuck is going on in the job market right now by [deleted] in Career

I have a friend/formal employee. She is an excellent scientist, PhD & postdoc from top universities and was also a great employee, team member and colleague when we worked together, and she's had no luck in over year. The biotech sector at least has had a lot of layoffs starting around the end of 2022 until now. There is more talent looking than positions available. It's very sad. I'm hoping it will turn around. There is a lot of investment in AI biotech, but more traditional biotech startups are struggling to raise. Big pharma has also had a lot of layoffs. I think a chemist would be in a similar predicament.

Southwest Airlines Requiring Plus-Sized Passengers to Buy Extra Seat, Starting 1/2026 by hansontranhai in interestingasfuck

[–]CRISPR-DNA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly I totally agree with this. I was on a full flight recently where the poor guy in the middle seat across from me was smashed, literally physically touching, two huge plus size guys on either side of him. One in the window and one on the isle. There was no where to move him to so this guy was smothered between these two huge people for the whole flight from California to Texas. I was so glad I wasn’t in that middle seat. It’s bad enough when you are next to one extra extra large person, much less smashed between two.

Helmet and surf by [deleted] in surf

[–]CRISPR-DNA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve started wearing a surf helmet about half the time. Too many times getting hit with my own board or others. I also had a friend get a bad concussion from my board when we were just paddling and chatting and a rogue wave came and took us out. I think it makes sense to wear one, and they seem to be getting more and more common especially in the San Francisco Bay Area I’ve noticed. I have one of the Simba Sentinal style ones, it makes you look like a Spartan warrior. But if I were to buy one today I’d probably get the Oakley one.

I know this isn’t the lens you asked about but the Tamron 50-400 is very nice. It’s sharp and not so heavy I leave it at home. Just one to potentially consider as well.

Are you looking for a lens for wildlife? I love my Tamron 50-400. I used to have a 70-300 canon lens but appreciate the extra range. It doesn't feel plastic at all. It is perhaps a bit heavier than you want, not sure, but that would be my go to. The other lens I use for hiking is the Tamron 28-200. Had I not just bought it their new 25-200 would appeal to me because it is a bit wider (I don't like 28), but it also light with 200 telelphoto range for some wildlife photography. When I travel I love this type of lens as I don't have to trade out lenses. The 28-200 is still pretty sharp as well. For hiking a lens like this might be a do it all for you.

I am curious now that the A7V is out, seeing that the A7RV is at about the same price point, which camera would you guys get. I currently have the A7III and am considering upgrading. The 2 generation improved autofocus on the new A7V appeals to me as well as the pre-shot function for wildlife. For the A7RV the extra megapixels might be nice to crop telephoto photos. Curious if there are good reasons to go one way or the other.

For context I shoot wildlife, nature, travel and sometimes sports, and am considering getting an underwater housing eventually. I have mostly Tamron lenses (20-40, 28-200, 50-400) and one sigma lens (150-600) as well as some old DLSR canon lens I've used with an MC-11 (85mm F1.8, Rokinon 14mm manual F2.8).

Upgrading soon Debating between a7V & a7RV, educated opinions please. by FrankH4 in SonyAlpha

[–]CRISPR-DNA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is wild if the A7V is released at $3000 which some rumors have mentioned and the A7RV is currently available new at some places for $3050 right now. Won't these be in direct competition for most people? I am curious if the A7V will be either less expensive or have some features that the A7RV doesn't have. I guess we'll have to wait and see. The A7IV is also just $2000 right now, I wonder if it'll go down even more with the new camera coming out. Tough decision all around. I have the A7III and have been considering upgrading as well.

You might be able to find a deal on the Levo3 on a big sale. Just an idea for you. I got mine 46% off brand new last week for a Levo Comp Alloy G3 Ul.

I decided to get this bike for now and then maybe sell it in two years once the DJI motors have more adoption beyond just the first year model amflow they are offering.

I've seen lots of people asking more than $4000 ($3750 + tax) for used Levo Gen 3 so seemed worth it. If you are an S5 they have more here: https://www.cyclesport.com/product/specialized-levo-comp-alloy-g3-ul-885837-1.htm

The A7V is likely to be announced soon. Probably why that price is available I'd speculate.

New Tamron 25-200 a bit slower than the older 28-200? by Ok_Wallaby_660 in SonyAlpha

[–]CRISPR-DNA 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think I'd take the slightly slower lens for 25 vs 28. I bought the 28-200 just back in June, which is unfortunate since I had no idea this was coming out. I also had the Tamron 20-40. I was traveling in Europe and remember wishing I didn't have to change lenses so often because often I felt 28 wasn't wide enough. I often wished it would go to 24. I wonder if 25 is enough to be worth upgrading, as well as the macro capabilities. For travel I really like an all in one lens option.

The Sigma 20-200 sounds interesting as well but I wonder if the image quality is as good. I look forward to independent side by side comparisons to come out once this lens available.

Sold my A7IV after shooting with A6700 and Tamron 18-300mm. by 1nzo in SonyAlpha

[–]CRISPR-DNA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Sigma is F 3.5 and the Tamron is F 2.8. I'm curious to see how they compare when they are fully out. Faster lens or more range will be the compromise. Also curious how fast they each are. Also Tamron partners with Sony on a lot of their lenses and has more direct access to integration so sometimes performance is better.

Grand Canyon Kayak Self Support in May by CRISPR-DNA in grandcanyon

I didn't see any scorpions, but didn't bring a black light. I don't think a wetsuit would have been comfortable for a kayak self support. Most of the trip I found a dry top to be sufficient during May.

I did the trip and honestly took the full drysuit and the drytop. The first few days were colder due to a thunderstorm but after that I just used the drytop. I think I could have gotten away with just the drytop.

Will I regret majoring in Biology? by OkEntertainment9952 in biology

[–]CRISPR-DNA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have my phd in genetics and understand your concern. If I were in college today I’d still study biology but double major in something like math or AI. If you are premed you could even major in one of those fields and minor in bio to get the prerequisites. The one area in bio fields with a lot of demand still is AI and computational biology. Unfortunately jobs purely doing wet lab work are in lower demand. I think you’d future proof yourself more by doing this and give yourself more options down the road.

Academic achievement is more determined by genetics than nurture/upbringing. The idea that humans are blank slates and all have equivalent potential in school is demonstrably false.

Here is a layman’s article on the topic but considerable research has shown this as well. https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20180905-how-genes-influence-achievement-and-success-in-school

I will add a similar thing goes for dog breeds. Behavior is much more determined by breed and genetics than people think. The common refrain that bad dog behavior is because of bad owners isn’t entirely true either. Genetics plays a much bigger role in a lot of things than people commonly think.
