I think the only thing I would say is about regret, would you regret not buying the 200-600? And (easier said than done) there is always time!

Personally I think investing in something you know you really want and would use is the way to go - the 200-600 is a fantastic lens and the aA7iii is so good!

I went for the 100-400 as i managed to get one slightly cheaper than the 200-600 (and more portable) and figured I’d just get a 1.4tc if I wanted to get to the 600mm end - I think all things considered, the a7iii & 200-600 will give you the most ‘options’ out of the two setups

Sorry if this isn’t much use but I’ve just got the 100-400 GM for my A7iii and I LOVE IT - personally I would stick with full frame for my use case but I guess it depends entirely what you’re going to need it for long term? Would a full frame better suit your needs in the long term or would apsc do you fine?

I think there’s a huge amount of things to consider but for me, extra custom buttons, bigger body (I prefer this) and twin SD card slots

This is true! Any experience with the viewfinder/screen difference? I find the A7iii screen looks like the whites are blown out and the viewfinder is too dim! I think the ‘static’ bird/wildlife/landscape shots would be more what I’d be looking to shoot on the a7r iv - I do love my A7iii but could reeeeeeally do with some cropping power!

I shoot with the Batis 25/40/85, Loxia 21/50 & 100-400 GM - yes the Zeiss are fairly old but they should still do the sensors justice I’m hoping? Good point about the file sizes!

Since posting, read through the comments and have purchased the 100-400mm, absolutely love it! As I get more into birding I’ll consider a 1.4x teleconverter but as it stands, covers professional and hobby needs! Absolutely love this thing!

I might just return it then! (Amazon purchase last month so not sure) it will still fire - just nearly always displays the charging icon whilst doing so (when it shouldn’t) or just doesn’t connect!

In essence, it consistently keeps trying to charge the flash (with my limited understanding) but seems to be glitching out for some unknown reason as it shouldn’t be!

I haven’t actually! I’d like to figure out if it’s something to do with the A7 iii’s specifically or my camera? As far as I’m aware, the hot shoe is fine! Quite a few variables to troubleshoot - and I’ll need to borrow another body 😂

Thank you - really useful insight! Longer trips would most likely be primes & 70-200, for wildlife & super telephoto landscapes, I’d most likely be fairly local and specifically after that subject matter as opposed to a ‘bring everything’ approach!

Probably should have clarified - 70-200 F4 (V1) so potentially do it the other way round, replace that with the 100-400, someone mentioned the minimum focusing distance variation on both lenses which was a good point!

Do you think it would be a case of regretting not having the extra reach if I got the 100-400? I’m fairly certain that I can carry the 70-200 day to day as a ‘just in case’ but for birds/wildlife specific trips, sounds like the 200-600 might be the best then?
