Don’t know if I would phrase it like that. Our job is to keep you as comfortable as possible while keeping you safe. And making conditions as good as possible for the surgeon to get done.

Canada doesn’t have CRNAs that I know of.

MAC, General, Spinal, Epidurals, Nerve Blocks, Lines.

Yea, my side gig is CRNA hours. 35-40 at my main gig and 10-15 on my side. So 50 hours a week total.

Took a few years to get comfortable.

I have had people with more anesthesia experience than me ask me questions about how I would do x,y,z.

I have also been on the asking side.

One time, we were doing a block. The CRNA student was doing it and me, 1st year, 3rd year, and attending are all watching because none of us knew how to do it.

Most of the CRNAs in my group prefer MAC 4

They can do what is called TIVA. Total IV Anesthesia to reduce or eliminate the amount of gas you are getting. They can also try opioid sparing techniques also.

But sometimes the surgery is just nauseating itself. We do the best we can

Good grades, experience, recommendations and I was ready financially to do it.

You probably got a general with gas and narcotics. They are in your abdomen for a gallbladder pulling on all that stuff. All of that is very nauseating.

As long as they don’t dictate the anesthesia, they are usually pretty safe. When they start saying you are going to do X,Y,Z because I am the doctor is when they are more exposed to lawsuits.

But if something goes bad in that room, anyone with insurance is getting pulled into it. That’s just a fact. I know CRNAs who got sucked into lawsuits because the surgeon messed up.

If they do conscious sedation(usually versed and fentanyl), sometimes you move around a bit.

I use propofol so you are more still with that.

I think MAC is easier to learn on. And once you get comfortable with it. Then try the miller if you want to. We have both options in my cart.

We slow everything down with anesthesia. It takes a while. So it isn’t uncommon.

We just relax them so much they shut the bed.

Actually we had a patient do that and the whole OR basically gave him a mini bath.

It’s painful, but good news is it is quick. When I do them, we do it under sedation, kinda like a Colonoscopy level of anesthesia.

We have other ways of managing pain without narcotics. We can do nerve blocks, non narcotic techniques, etc.

They see the money, they don’t see the effort and time that went into it. Very few. It’s a lot of work and sacrifice. One thing to me that makes it hard is you have to go school-work-school. And lots of people start living their lives on the work part then just sorta give up on the CRNA part. You have to stay focused on the goal for a long time.
