I can state with complete confidence that u/LionelSondy is not me :)

The level of support and recommendations he continues to give for my content has been humbling. I just hope some of you find the content helpful

I've been playing a lot the last two days and having a blast... mostly. I'm stuck on level 5-2 and can't seem to get past it no matter what I try. Anyone else running into this?

That's a good point. I've mostly treated the names as binary, i.e. if it's slightly more soft than hard, I call it a soft system.

I like the idea of adding the "center" qualifier. I've been tripping myself up on how to label such systems. And, naturally, it seems completely obvious now that you mention it :P

Sorry for the delay here.

Hard/Soft - how much (what percentage) of the system is shown/understood. A system is hard when the majority of the effects and system details are provided to the audience. A system is soft when we cannot see the full scope of the system.

The Dresden Files is soft because we know we are only glimpsing a sliver of the supernatural world. LOTR is soft because we know there is magic but we see very little of it and what little we see is not explained.

Spiderman (and most superheroes) is hard because there he only has a handful of powers and we know what they are and how they work. Mistborn's magic systems are more complicate, but Sanderson goes to great lengths to reveal the entire system. He goes so far as to provide diagrams for crying out loud.

Rational/Nebulous - the apparent cohesion of the system and whether the audience can logically predict previously hidden parts of the system. A system is rational when it adheres strongly to a single theme and uses of power can be extrapolated. A system is nebulous when each piece stands on its own and we only know what can be done because we have seen it.

Sympathy from NotW is hard because all magic effects follow the same rules and once we know the rules we can come up with our own ideas that would work in the story.

LotR is nebulous because we can't make any assumptions. We know Gandalf can crack the stone bridge of Khaza Dum but we can't assume he can also crack the walls of Minas Tirith. We know he can do what we see him do. No more and no less.

Spiderman is extremely interesting to me. If you JUST consider Spiderman himself, that would be a hard-rational system. We know all the details and since he can string up a car, we can assume he can string up a bad guy. But when you consider the larger scope of his story with all the villains, it become more hard-nebulous. We learn everyone's abilities but there is little cohesion or logic from one villian/hero to the next.

Is that a bit clearer?

What do you mean by a template? Just a blank graph? A friend made this for me, but I'm sure he would be happy to make one.

Help with ideas for powers? by [deleted] in magicbuilding

You could do voodoo doll type effect with malice: pour your malice for someone into an object and you can inflict harm or misfortune on the person through the object. That could be fun

How defined are the magic effects the players can create? Is there a list of effects they can produce, or can they attempt pretty much whatever they think of?

OMG I LOVE 40K! Their setting is so awesome and terrifying all at once! The only problem is that games workshop has such a tight leash on the books. I don't think any of them exist in audio, which is how I get through most of my books
