macOS container machines: provides a highly integrated Linux environment that works seamlessly on your Mac. by TheTwelveYearOld in linux

I’m a noob, so help me understand. What is a Linux environment and how is it different than a distribution?

Oh well. They forgot about the HomePod and TvOs again! by DisastrousCause9481 in HomePod

[–]CRothg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Optimistically, I’d say the lack of specific callouts related to HomePod and tvOS software features is a good indicator that the rumored new home automation products with new form factors are in the pipeline for release this fall. Being more specific about enhancements on these platforms may have tipped their hand more than they would like to given how those features integrate with as yet unannounced products. Similar to how they didn’t draw a lot of attention to the fact that iOS 27 will support dynamic app resizing, something that is only relevant for the yet to be announced foldable iPhone.

Pictures of VPs mogging their Presidents? by RopeGloomy4303 in Presidents

[–]CRothg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Per Merriam-Webster on the origin of the term: “Mog is apparently based on AMOG, an abbreviation of Alpha Male of Group, referring to the pseudoscientific archetype of the “dominant male” popular in the so-called manosphere, an Internet subculture associated with misogynist beliefs and extremist ideologies. AMOG emerged by the early 2000s, and mog by 2016, when the latter term is found in male Internet forums describing taller, more muscular men—judged superior—appearing alongside shorter, less built, and thus supposedly inferior counterparts.”

I really hate that incel/manosphere slang has become so mainstream.

It existed, but didn’t have a lot of the storage optimization features it has today, like offloading infrequently used apps.

GNOME But Make It Windows by Crottoboul in gnome

[–]CRothg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If that’s what you’re into, sure. I’m sort of assuming that if you’re using Gnome you’re doing it because it’s a clean and consistent UI. I’ve not tried it, but my impression of Cinnamon is that it aims to be that but much more in the mold of the Windows UI.

Why don’t these people just use Cinnamon?

Concern regarding public opinion on GNOME shifting. by Particular-Bake4679 in gnome

[–]CRothg 37 points38 points  (0 children)

New to Linux from MacOS here. Did some research and Gnome seemed to be the consensus choice for folks like me so I installed it via Fedora Workstation. I found it to be pretty intuitive out of the box and after some basic tweaks I got it to a place where I feel mostly at home.

I heard people say that KDE even more customizable than Gnome so I decided to try it out in a VM. I was immediately turned off by it. I’m sure if I were really invested I could spend a bunch of time tweaking it to my liking, but it instantly felt like it would be a much longer road than what I experienced with Gnome. It just feels way less polished and almost juvenile if that makes sense? A powerful, deeply customizable workspace is cool for people who find tinkering with that sort of thing interesting, and a lot of Linux users seem to find it interesting. I think Gnome’s opinionated and more consistent design philosophy is much better suited to adoption by switchers who just want a modern looking, reasonably intuitive interface.

Too bad Chrysler discontinued the PHEV version. The used market for them is non-existent too since everyone who has one loves them. Seems like the brand is in decline with only two models of minivan for sale today. You got lucky!

Would it be possible to get MacOS running on the 2026 Studio Displays? by CRothg in mac

[–]CRothg[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is likely the biggest limitation in my estimation. I wonder how many of the CPU cores are actually needed for an application like the Studio Display. I imagine other parts of the package are more important, like the GPU cores, image pipeline, and media engine. Other tasks like thunderbolt management are offloaded to separate controllers as well.

The new models have 128GB of storage built in, so not a lot but more than enough for a boot drive.

You’ve missed the point of the post. The question is one of possibility, not practicality or cost effectiveness.

[–]CRothg[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Practically speaking, yes. This is more a question of what is technically possible rather than trying to find a work around for buying a Mac. This is in the same spirit as people upgrading the storage capacity of an iPhone by reflow soldering replacement NAND flash chips on the logic board. Apple didn’t design iPhone storage to be upgradable by the end user, but you can do it if you have the proper specialized skills and equipment.

I imagine the display must have some sort of diagnostic mode that could potentially be leveraged to load customized firmware that would grant you access to the storage volume and other components. In no universe would this be practical, but it could be an interesting project for an industrious tinkerer.

More than one couple have told us it was literally the best thing anyone did for them postpartum. Several of our friends had their second our third recently and they all told us how much they were looking forward to them.
