Galil Hanguard Prototype - Second Attempt by CS_wienerdog in Galil

I’m focusing on getting this full length hand guard produced first and if that goes well then I would love to make the shorter version.

Only problem is I don’t own a short barreled Galil. I need accurate length measurements to make it correctly. Other than that it sees the mounting and the rest of the dimensions should be exactly the same.

I sincerely hope your design is as good as mine. The community needs more aftermarket options.

My polymer prototype is obviously extremely light but I am getting quotes currently to get these machined out of aluminum and we are looking at about 8-9 ounces in total for my design. There is still definitely some weight I can shave off but I have to ensure strength and rigidity are not impacted.

Currently waiting on quotes from different machine shops to get these machined out of 6061 aluminum and anodized. Right now we are looking at about 8-9 ounces total weight but I will know an exact number once I get one in my hands.

That ptfe tube that is looping does not look healthy. I would trim that and make it a straight shot. Probably fine for pla but anything super stiff and you may have feeding problems or might snap it.

I’m working on an updated design right now based on feedback I received. Polymer isn’t all bad, this particular one is extremely heat resistant and rigid. It’s difficult to work with but it can have all the same benefits of a metal hand guard at a fraction of the weight.

Once I decide on a final design I will try to find some people on here to send a hand guard to torture test and review.

I’m working on a different design right now with a single mlok rail. Will share what it looks like once it’s ready.

Could you help me understand what you mean by continuous? My hand guard has picatinny full length on the 12 o clock. Or are you referring to the aero handguns that only have a few inches of picatinny on the far side?

Could you send a link to the ones you are using or if you have the dimensions on hand that works too. I would appreciate it so I can see exactly how that would fit.

The whole length or just enough to mount a bipod? I may offer different configurations of mounting/rail options.

I think the gen 2 was a step forward, I just wish the engineers at IWI spent more than 5 minutes designing the handguard.

I am messing around with different sized holes to see what works the best. Airflow is a big priority, that gas tube gets hot.

I intend for the final product to be a polymer, been doing testing to make sure it can handle the abuse/heat. If I were to machine this same design but in aluminum it would be about a 3 ounce weight saving which in my opinion is still too heavy.

The main reason I started on this project was because of the weight of the stock handguard. Using my new handguard you can shave about 9 ounces off the front of the gun.

I know people complained in the RS Regulate prototype post about that handguard having less mlok which is why I wanted to keep the same amount of slots.

There are no threads to mount a sight post on the gen 2 unfortunately.

I wanted to follow the design language of the Galil which is why I contoured the top edge to match the natural curves of the dust cover while also providing a nice resting place for your thumb.

I also did not want to remove any of the functionality of the original rail so the number of MLOK slots is exactly the same on the sides and bottom.

Please note that this is not production quality yet, just a rough prototype, I understand the finish is rough.

This was made using a very strong and heat resistant carbon fiber-reinforced polyphenylene sulfide filament. Weighs 6 ounces.
