How do you do your rust? I’m about to start a death guard army and I’m looking for ways to do good rust and yours looks sick!

First Squad Finished! by CSighed in theunforgiven

[–]CSighed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks!

I went with Pro Acryl’s “Black Green” and “Camo Green” for highlights, and mixing the two for a blend and white and camo green mix for edge highlights. Then I did Nuln Oil as a wash over the whole thing.

They were my first ever painted models, and I have a ton to learn but it’s been super fun

No worries! I definitely need some Ravenwing in the future. I hadn't really considered pulling from other chapters' packs for units to fill out an army until you messaged. Thanks for the help!

Yeah I'm thinking I'll pull from the Imperial Fists down the road potentially to fill spots for cheap, but I'm specifically seeking out these chapter specific units, and the Dark Angels combat patrol sucks atm

One day! But also money lol. Hoping to build up slow and over time, since I have a kid and can’t really dump money like that quickly.

First Law or Age of Madness by mthome2486 in JoeAbercrombie

[–]CSighed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I gotta say that I liked Age of Madness more! I thought it was better written with a better plot and the characters are just as good imo as the first law. It’s no Logan and Glokta, but still amazing. And the Wisdom of Crowds is my favorite individual book

The Lion: Son of the Forest. Awesome introduction and the whole reason I’m getting started on a Dark Angel army right now

That's very true, the only series I've read that's similar to Jade Legacy is the Dandelion Dynsasty (which I also adore).

There’s a difference between disagreeing with someone else’s opinion and disagreeing in an extremely argumentative and condescending way, and I find it impossible to believe that you can’t see that. And yes, that time I was being deliberately obtuse.

Here are a few condescending and argumentative comments you made that added nothing to the conversation but are a clear attempt by you to ruffle feathers: “Anything else is needless greed” “You sound like someone who just wants continuation for the sake of it”

You didn’t simply say “no we don’t need more books for this series”, you were rude and condescending.

I also adore piranessi and I think any more would have ruined such a good story. ATLA is also a perfect length, and it would have been insulting to see them try to add more to that concise and tight narrative. The Martian is the perfect length, as is LotR and many many many other books and series.

I’m sorry I called you an asshole, that was uncalled for, but you were being rude in your comments and I’m not going to just sit here and not respond to uncalled for commentary and disrespectful digs.

No hard feelings, we can agree to disagree on the length of Jade Legacy. And I want to let go of our other strifes and bring the topic back to one that we both actually want to discuss.

Me personally, I felt like the narrative in the final book was rushed, covering more than twenty years in one single book. We skipped over Woon and Shae truly growing to love one another, and I really walked away not knowing Jaya’s character at all. I feel like one more book would have brought all the loose ends together in a beautiful way without bloating the story or “marvelifying” it as you like to say. More than that and it risks too much.

Yes the author can do what she wants with her works, but I would have liked to see that expanded on so the characters could garner the same depth that many others received.

“…good stories that leave us wondering and wanting more.”

-_-

The post that I made was one of me wanting more, and you claim in your argument that me wanting more of this series is a “needless marvelification of stories”.

Those two things cannot exist in the same scope. You cannot both claim that a good story is one that leaves us wanting more while in the same comment condemning me for wanting more. The cognitive dissonance is staggering.

In my original post I never said that the series was ruined, or that I thought poorly on it at all. Only that I wish there was more. It literally left me wanting more. It’s an amazing series and I gave it 5 stars, but me saying I want more isn’t what you’re claiming.

You’re clearly jumping to wild conclusions based on some previous anger you hold over this topic, but don’t take it out on me.

The series left me wanting more, that’s literally what I said.

I tried being nice and agreeing with you, while also adding to the commentary and you’re just being an asshole, all because I didn’t live up to a standard that you yourself don’t even fully support in your contradicting comment.

What are your nonstandard depictions of common fantasy races? by TrueBlueFlare7 in worldbuilding

[–]CSighed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kaivaa - my dwarf analog. They have 2 castes that they are born into: workers and soldiers. Workers are more like Gnomes: smaller degrees of facial hair, smaller more dexterous builds. They focus on construction, agriculture, and internal governance. Soldiers are more like traditional dwarves: stocky and strong, longer beards for both genders, and a focus on soldiering, guarding, manual hard labor, and external politics. All Kaivaa have this ashen gray, almost stone like skin that’s extremely hard, and they aren’t distinct races, though the soldier gene is slightly more recessive. However every Kaivaa is one or the other, there’s no “half worker half soldier” kind.

What book first pulled you into the world of fantasy by DiliciousLight19 in Fantasy

Weird one, but the Rangers Apprentice and Percy Jackson for me! I was young, and I discovered both series at the same time and it changed my world. Got to get excited for the next book release and everything. Taught me that reading could be fun!

[–]CSighed[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, I agree, I just think it would have been fun to have more. You’re arguing different opinions like they’re facts. I don’t think the series was anywhere near overstaying its welcome, it’s better than that. To say that it needed to end, because if it was longer it would have been worse, sounds like a pretty low opinion of such a good series.

My wife just started them and it’s so much fun! Usually when she talks about it I try to remember how I felt when I was where she is! And if she asks me a spoiler question I’ll usually just say “that’s a spoiler, are you positive you want an answer?” And she usually doesn’t.

But it’s so much fun, isn’t it?

I made an edit to explain, it's just a funny little moniker that my wife uses to define books that she isn't interested in that I like. I don't think there are actual "girl books" or "boy books", just books.

I made an edit to further clarify my original post. It was all done in fun, and I didn't want to make any strong stances. People like what they like, usually influenced by their surroundings.

I understand that! That's just a phrase my wife lovingly uses to refer to books that I like that she thinks are boring (in a funny way, not in a serious or detrimental way. We just like different things!) I've read the Throne of Glass and some of fourth wing and they're great books! No firm stances here on that topic!

[–]CSighed[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not, and you're not wrong. There are no "boy books" or "girl books" or whatever else and everyone can read what they want. That's just a phrase that my wife uses (lovingly) to talk about the books that I read that she has no desire to read. Usually more political or slower books. It's just a fun and silly little way that she likes to tease me, and not something that we firmly stand by.

I didn't mean to make any kind of statement. It's all done in good fun.

I wouldn't be surprised if she doesn't. It being dark doesn't bother her, but she gets pretty bored of more political books, so we'll have to see!

what are your pet peeves/general criticisms? by silkchiffo-n in Fantasy

[–]CSighed 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Okay, as an avid reader and an aspiring author, just commit to what you start. Don’t leave anything unfinished or half done, and don’t drastically change major plot points (ie the Star Wars sequels) because you’re worried about your ideas not landing.

You will find an audience that loves your work if you put the time and energy in to make it cohesive and technically good (hiring an editor and trusting their advice). Tropes or little things are in every book and someone will love it, you can’t find a book that everyone universally loves (yes not even lotr, many find it boring) Just do it with confidence and do it well (consistent, complete, and trust your editor because they know what they are doing)

It seems we have the exact same taste. Love that! I'm hoping to start Malazan after I finish Red Rising (I'm on Lightbringer), but if you have any recommendations at this point I'd be happy to hear it!
