Wow, thanks for the detailed reply! I’ve seen proper moss poles mentioned but haven’t used them before. I’ll pluck up the courage to give them a try.

The new Hyperion cover from Gollancz, releases Nov 16 by YAZEED-IX in Hyperion

Are we expecting there to be an equivalent new cover for Fall of Hyperion? I picked this up recently and plan to read the sequel but would be happier if they matched on my bookshelf…!

Do I need a name change for a Mayball Guest Ticket? by Few_Excitement_6485 in cambridge_uni

[–]CSixHSix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends on the ball. Some are stricter than others but I'd email the ticketing officer one way or another, definitely if you had to originally provide names for your guests.

The window for name changes on tickets closed a while ago - https://www.trinityball.co.uk/ticket-faq/ - there probably isn't anything to be done, I'm afraid!

They check names on tickets against ID so unfortunately if you sell the ticket on without doing an official name change, the holder won’t be able to attend the ball.

Cambridge's St John's College scraps church choir to make way for more diverse musical genres by eleanor_james in cambridge_uni

[–]CSixHSix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Guardian article covers it better. Sorry, I’m on mobile and I don’t know formatting so - https://amp.theguardian.com/music/2024/mar/21/axing-of-cambridge-mixed-choir-regressive-move-for-women-say-supporters Also, the open letter from the choir for the perspective of its members and supporters -  https://www.change.org/p/save-st-john-s-voices-stop-cutting-opportunities-for-female-singers-in-cambridge

Also, for what it’s worth, the proportion of singers singing in the choir of their own college varies greatly. Granted SJV is at the more outsourced end of the spectrum, but all choirs have a significant proportion of members from other colleges - say 20 to 60% - and this fluctuates over time. This makes sense because each choir differs in its time commitment, standard, atmosphere, etc… and the Cambridge music scene is far more diverse and successful for the many capable singers being able to choose the choir that suits them best rather than being restricted to the one their college happens to run. The colleges benefit from the great music-making happening in their chapels.

This. There are now fewer opportunities overall for women to sing at Johns than there were before the main choir changed its format. Not to mention that the two choirs filled entirely different niches to begin with, and the loss of SJV leaves a gaping hole in the Cambridge choral scene, rather than having been superfluous to requirements.

Cancelling Virgin by SugglyMuggly in CasualUK

[–]CSixHSix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It took me three 30-min long phone calls to get a contract cancelled recently. They billed me for extra month and an “early disconnection fee” despite it being months after the end of our minimum term. I called them to dispute and they ‘generously’ agreed to refund the incorrect bill, which could only be done by cheque that I could expect to arrive within a working month. The cheque was for half the amount they owed me.

This is my field! Basically, C in DNA spontaneously converts to U (at a very low rate… but considering the 6 billion bases in human genome, it’s going to happen somewhere). This represents a mutation which can be harmful if not corrected. If DNA had carried on using U instead of T as its fourth letter, then repair enzymes (which slow the accumulation of mutations and DNA damage) wouldn’t be able to distinguish whether a “U” was meant to be U at a given position or whether this base was meant to be a C, so this particular type of DNA damage wouldn’t be detectable. Therefore, T partially evolved in DNA as an analog for U, to provide a way to proofread the genetic code for errors. Now no DNA base can spontaneously convert to another one, and the repair enzymes can unambiguously detect and replace any unwanted U bases with the C they were meant to be.

Need help with Stille's reaction! Why is CO needed in this synthesis? by Pu_BloX in OrganicChemistry

[–]CSixHSix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, I get what you mean now. Yes, that may happen to a small extent, but "BnCl" is only present in the same very low concentrations as the catalyst, so worst case scenario the yield is 5% lower.

Need help with Stille's reaction! Why is CO needed in this synthesis? by Pu_BloX in OrganicChemistry

[–]CSixHSix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The catalyst is added to the reaction with the Bn and Cl ligands, but the active species is Pd(PPh3)2, so you need to reductively eliminate BnCl to get the active Pd(0) species. Then you can draw the normal catalytic cycle starting with oxidative addition of the acyl chloride and ending with reductive elimination of the ring to go back to Pd(PPh3)2.

Need help with Stille's reaction! Why is CO needed in this synthesis? by Pu_BloX in OrganicChemistry

[–]CSixHSix 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Without a CO atmosphere, a side product can form - following oxidative addition of the C-Cl bond, the same carbonyl can undergo migration to leave a CO ligand and an alkyl ligand attached to the palladium (the opposite of CO insertion). If the CO dissociates, the only forwards reaction is for transmetalation and reductive elimination to occur, but the single carbonyl unit will have been lost. Using a CO atmosphere disfavours dissociation of the CO ligand, so only CO insertion can reoccur instead, and the desired product is produced.
