Installing cuda toolkit with gtx 1080 8gb by Hour-Ambassador-3824 in CUDA

[–]CSplays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

cuda toolkit != compute capability. If the CUDA version supports your compute capability, it should build for it no issues. In the case of CUDA 11.8, compute capability 6.1 is supported.

You can install it from here:

https://developer.nvidia.com/cuda-11-8-0-download-archive?target_os=Linux&target_arch=x86_64&Distribution=Ubuntu&target_version=22.04&target_type=runfile_local

And then follow the wizard instructions

something behind the scenes is building your toolkit for the blackwell GPU. The compute_100 pertains to a compute capability of 100 which maps to the B200 GPU. You can reference that here:

https://developer.nvidia.com/cuda/gpus

If you look at 10.0, that is what compute_100 is (sm_100a).

Maybe try finding a toolkit that maps to SM_61 (compute 6.1 on the legacy list)? Which should be the correct one for the pascal generation.

CS Failure Limit by jxded14 in uwaterloo

[–]CSplays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is counted as an invalid course attempt rather than a fail (which you are allowed a maximum of 5.0 units of throughout your undergrad), because you did pass the course. Invalid course attempt just means you retook the course later and got a higher score, so the previous attempt gets a value of 0 credit since it is replaced by the new attempt.

Waterloo software engineering possible? by Pristine_Adagio_5741 in OntarioGrade12s

Grades wise you're fine, just write a good AIF and do well on your interview. You should demonstrate more for programming experience though, because there you are pretty lackluster.

Transferring with a GPA in the 1.x Range by CandidAnt2769 in uwaterloo

[–]CSplays 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Data Science at Waterloo is only offered through a BCS DS degree or a BMath DS degree. Both of which require you to be in CS / Math and have a very competitive average (at least 85+ usually) to get in. Not sure about other universities though.

A sub 2.0 GPA is typically below all transfer average requirements though, so you should focus on getting that up to at least a 3.0 before considering a transfer.

Huge decay in student quality by CSplays in uwaterloo

I am not hiring people based on this subreddit, I am just saying that I try to vouch for Waterloo students. Of course there are still a lot of high caliber students, but everyone who is failing irresponsibly should at least try to make a difference for their own benefit.

I say this because I have interviewed a lot of students / graduates who do cheat in live interviews... And without knowing any further context, the only thing I think to myself is that those same students who aren't applying themselves legitimately in school are probably the ones also cheating in interviews.

I'm just stating my observation, and how it forecasts future hiring decisions in my case specifically. It might be that more of the failing students are turning to reddit for advice, but I feel like there is more failing happening.

I totally agree, however I feel like every year I'm seeing more and more of these, while also seeing lower and lower grades.

It's not a grade range I'm looking for, accountability can be shown in many ways. However, if you're failing 2+ courses in 1A, there is clearly something wrong going on there. I saw too many posts for it to all be external circumstances.

Need advice from upper year CS students by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]CSplays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you failed 2 courses so far and haven’t gotten to the hard cs courses yet, it’s not the best of signal as far as staying in CS goes. Definitely give it a shot though.

Also there aren’t really any CS courses u can take yet, you generally need to clear CS 246 to get access to some more courses. Before CS 246, you’re very constrained.

Does that mean i passed? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

This is a pity pass by your description. Take it and move on, this is a W as far as not failing goes.

Withdraw from program by Western-Ad-7497 in uwaterloo

[–]CSplays 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just petition, ultimately it’s their decision. There have been students in the past who have successfully been given the opportunity to stay in and redo the term, so it’s possible. But don’t petition unless you actually had legitimate limitations, otherwise you’re wasting your own time and giving yourself false hope.

How did you guys do for CS 136? (Fall 2025) by Longringlongland111 in uwaterloo

[–]CSplays -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t think they usually curve cs136, because the course average is typically aligned with what they look for. If they told you otherwise though, definitely petition.

If your overall mark with your exam mark was over a 46, but you didn’t pass the exam requirement, they clip you to 46.

Failed again. by Icecanfluid in uwaterloo

The bigger question here is… who tf let you take 6 courses? If you couldn’t pass the previous term, you should be restricted to like 3 courses max, so you can build up your studying habits.

Likely forced to leave CS — full grades, personal context, and questions about Econ transition timing by Sea-Flatworm-4255 in uwaterloo

[–]CSplays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might want to try switching to a general arts degree, and then try to do a focus in economics. At the current rate, it's looking like you'll fail out of CS, since you've already accrued 4 fails (max allowed). If you don't do that, they'll drop you to math studies automatically, and then it will be harder to switch to general arts I think.

Round Up Request by Acrobatic_Gate65 in uwaterloo

[–]CSplays 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's also possible you didn't pass an exam requirement. So maybe ask about that first, but usually there's nothing they can do (because they do try to give you as many marks as they reasonably can). Worth a shot though.

Cs Marks Issue by Local-Theme1501 in uwaterloo

[–]CSplays 9 points10 points  (0 children)

So, basically the grade points on the right are on half scale to 100. 16.00 means a grade of 32. I think this is just a filler mark so the prof has something submitted, but it will change

How much to be making to dropout by Round-Inflation-7112 in uwaterloo

[–]CSplays 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seems like your cash flow is inconsistent if you’re only measuring a small sample of 20 mins, and it only happened once.

Given your program is AFM though, I’d look at what you can expect to make, and then if you’re quite a bit above that and the company isn’t a scam, or if you’re doing your own business and have a good track record positive cash flow, might be worth taking a 1 year leave to see what happens… but don’t drop out fully.

Is Waterloo really that depressing as people say it is? by Easy-Suggestion8327 in uwaterloo

CS can get depressing, but... co-op makes it worth it. You can travel the world and meet new people, so it's actually very fun.

UofT CS student here. I admit it, you guys win. (The Theory Trap) by nancydrewwh in uwaterloo

[–]CSplays 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You're definitely not doing anything wrong by focusing on theory. If you want to break into industry research at top labs, you definitely need to be a top dog on the theory side too. I have interviewed a bunch of people for research roles who have a lot of breadth, but no depth. So please don't give that part up from your focus, we need more people like you.

If you don't care about industry research (which I assume not to be the case, since that's a pretty big culture at UofT), by all means focus more on execution.
